Elon Musk has turned Twiter/X into a conduit for virulent hate speech.
Given the torrent of abuse targeting leading figures in the UK general election, Britain ought to consider banning the platform until basic moderation has been restored.
Using Twitter is a vote of confidence in oligarchic fascism.

@ukelections

@standupmaths published a video recently on this very thing, and got an expert in to explain some of the difficulties in mapping local elections to general elections (and vice versa).

Did the #CrowdStrike problem really affect the most computers in history, as some hyperbolic reports claim? Probably not.

The numbers of computers hit by major worms and viruses over the decades is probably higher. ILOVEYOU was reported as 50M infections, just for 1 example.

But the lesson taught by the recent #UKGeneralElection results is surely that it is not how many computers one hits, it is how many of the *right sort* of computers one hits. Sheer numbers is the wrong metric.

Much as I was relieved at the outcome of the & the results make me slightly optimistic, I still find it depressing that the views I think would lead to a better world are still so niche: steady state rather than growth; treating billionaires as a social failure & people in need of mental health treatment; international relations based on cooperation & peace-seeking rather than competition & war-making.

I’ve been a bit distracted the last few weeks - did #reesmogg really get thumped back to whatever undershire he came from in most recent #ukgeneralelection ?

I sw that Labor did resounding well,but wasn’t able to pay usual mind to details.

All of the literature delivered to my house in constituency. Except for the leaflet & one flyer all were through the post

I am hearing that whilst the Voter ID protected us against non-existent forms of #UKGeneralElection fraud, the real fraud that may well have happened in significant numbers on the 4th of July (tens, over 100 by some reports, of #ReformUKLtd candidates not showing up anywhere and possibly not even existing) was never protected against at all.

I spotted the empty photograph placeholders, too.

Larry, enunciating each word slowly, deliberately, and with intensity: "I have seen some shit."

#LarryTheCat #UKPol #GeneralElection #UKElection #GE2024 #UKGeneralElection

A photo of a cat sitting in his territory outside 10 Downing Street, London. You can tell from the look on his face that Larry has seen some shit.

The caption above the photo says:
"I'm getting another one today. It's another rescue. I take them in for a few months until I can find them a permanent home. I hope this one will be ok but the last one was a nightmare!"

Quote from Wikipedia:
Larry (born c. January 2007) is a British domestic tabby cat who has been Chief Mouser to the Cabinet Office at 10 Downing Street since 2011. He is cared for by Downing Street staff and is not the personal property of the Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. Larry has lived at 10 Downing Street during the premierships of six prime ministers: David Cameron, Theresa May, Boris Johnson, Liz Truss, Rishi Sunak and Keir Starmer.

In both 1997 and 2014 the Tories were left under similar circumstances. (1) The economy had stabilised after a period of high inflation and high interest rates. In both cases they had claimed to save the economy, having been the ones to have just ruined it. (2) Endless sleaze. (3) Infighting.

The FPTP system means that if a far-right party gets 5 seats and a progressive Green party gets 4, then the former gets all the press coverage and the latter gets none. #UKGeneralElection

Charles Kennedy, former leader of the #LiberalDemocrats, died 9 years ago from complications of alcoholism. It’s hard not to think that the general election result, just weeks earlier, in which he lost his seat, and the party to which he had devoted his career was slashed from 57 to just 8 seats, might have had a role in precipitating it. So I wish that he could have been shown yesterday’s record-breaking total of 71 (or 72) seats. There’s a lesson there: never give up hope. #UKGeneralElection

Normal Island News

The greatest ever prime minister has lost her seat
How did we let this happen?

"You’re gonna have to bear with me because I’m a mess today. I’ve been up all night with my best friend Nadine Dorries and I might have had a few. Also, I’m livid because I tried to leave the country, but apparently, they don’t allow people in my “condition” onto aeroplanes. This day just keeps getting worse…"

I am totally delighted to see that #truss and #rees-mogg have lost their seats. They are among the most useless and frankly mad politicians in the #uk . They were never sane enough to hold office.

What better way to celebrate the defeat of the Brexit #conservative party in the #UK by sitting with a glass of #crement in hand while looking across to the #European Quarter in #Luxembourg.

The #Conservatives have spent thirty years fighting themselves, fighting #Britain then lying, and putting their hands in the #covid contracts till, all while #Johnson held parties and said "let the bodies pile high". #Truss then took billions from people's #pensions.

@MattMastodon @davidnjoku

what with apathy, suppression, postal votes vanishing, ID turn-aways and so on, it's reported that:
"Turnout across the UK as a whole was 60%, the second lowest in a UK election since 1885. Only 2001 was lower with 59%."

So, Labour's haul of 63% of MPs is the result of their 33.8% vote share which is from 20.3% of the electorate voting Labour.
