There was a virtual 'field trip'in The Syndi-Jean Journal: Year Two where they check out a #moonbase being constructed by diging up the #moon's surface, superheating it to create the matter to "print" buildings for the base.
It's been over 15 years since I wrote that, and it was really just speculation with the thought that it was a possibility.
Now the #science says its possible... (yay)

Please do not exit the central colony without adequate oxygen and radiation shielding. EVA suits are not a suitable barrier to direct exposure, and cannot be reused if you wander off and turn into boil in the bag idiot soup.

We celebrate on this date, September 13th, the separation of the Moon from Earth's orbit. The Moon will become a lonely wandering 'rock' in the vast, cold space, inhabited by a small human colony seeking a new place to live, far from Moon Base.

Some time back I posted a link to this article about a Northrup Grumman study of a lunar train. I used a lot of the same reasoning about dust when I came up with a lunar train concept in 1979, and I just found this concept model I built of a freight boxcar. I did a lot of drawings and made notes, but the model is (amazingly) all that survives.

Old concept model I built in 1979 for a boxcar to be used on a lunar railroad. It is cardstock and 1/48th scale. It is light blue, with various stripes and small decals, boxy, short, and low to the ground. There are two sets of wheels, but they aren't visible in the photo. The sides of the roof are beveled, except for a plain-box center section with double pressure loading doors on each side. This high side-quarter view has a large American flag to the left of the door.Old concept model I built in 1979 for a boxcar to be used on a lunar railroad. It is cardstock and 1/48th scale. It is light blue, with various stripes and small decals, boxy, short, and low to the ground. There are two sets of wheels, but they aren't visible in the photo. The sides of the roof are beveled, except for a plain-box center section with double pressure loading doors on each side. This is the reverse side from the previous photo, and while mostly identical, has a classic blue-circle NASA "meatball" logo to the left of the loading doors.
