It’s a cat amongst the parrots and pigeon today for #MosaicMonday! One parrot seems like they might be aware of the danger but it looks like the other two are in danger of becoming lunch!

The mid-5th century AD mosaic from the Chedworth Roman villa in the Cotswolds in Gloucestershire. The mosaic was found in a possible summer dining room in this National Trust site. This shows that at least some people kept the opulent lifestyle into the Dark Ages.

This #MosaicMonday we are immersed in this Nilotic mosaic from Palestrina. Greek soldiers can depicted on the banks of the Nile and appear to be sheltered from the weather by a large cloth that drapes down from the columned building nearby.

#AncientRome #History

This scene is part of the Nile mosaic of Palestrina (c. 100 BCE), found in Palestrina, Italy. It portrays a group of Ptolemaic Greek soldiers in Egypt on the banks of the Nile. The soldiers are clad in typical Hellenistic equipment including Phrygian and Attic type helmets, tunics or armour made of linen (linothorax in Greek), and various shield designs common to Hellenistic armies at the time. Similar Nilotic settings were popular in Republican and Imperial Roman art as a result of the Roman fascination with Egypt's exotic culture. This #MosaicMonday we’re celebrating the most guilty doggo in all of ancient Alexandria! With an expression to make hearts melt, could you really stay mad at this gorgeous creature? We’re betting not.

#AncientEgypt #History #Dogs

This Ptolemaic (2nd century BCE) mosaic emblema depicts a dog seated next to a gilded vessel that seems to have been turned over. Who could possibly say who is responsible? This mosaic is made in the opus vermiculatum technique and can be seen today at the Bibliotheca Alexandrina Antiquities Museum. Photo credit to Carole Raddato via World History Encyclopaedia.

The Littlecote Orpheus mosaic relates to the pagan revival during the reign of Julian the Apostate (361–363). In 360, the barn-like part of the villa was converted into a courtyard, and a triconch hall was built alongside, with its own bath suite with the mosaic.

A fishy mosaic? Well, marine life was a popular subject for ancient Roman mosaics! This beauty depicts a range of different fish as well as shellfish (perhaps a lovely northern hemispherite can identify them).

#MosaicMonday #AncientRome #History

Description from the Art Institute Chicago: “This mosaic, which was discovered in a house in Daphne (modern Harbiye), a prosperous garden town near Antioch, depicts several species of fish and shellfish. The representation of these sea creatures was likely intended to convey a message about the owner’s wealth as well as the variety of food available in the home. Reference number: 1937.48”

For #MosaicMonday we travel to Herculaneum and the gorgeous fresco that gives its name to the location: the House of Neptune and Amphitrite. The divinities pose while elegantly draped in light blue cloth while surrounded by stunning patterns.

Detail from a mosaic from the Casa di Nettuno e Amphitrite in Insula V, Herculaneum. The piece depicts two gods surrounded by mosaic scrollwork detail and above them the design appears to showcase a pleated awning cover.

Hopefully your Monday is going better than this poor fish, who seems to be in a bit of a funk. An observation made all the more reasonable by the fact that they only have two clams for company and appear to be swimming over a fish graveyard 👀

A Dionysian Roman mosaic with an eros riding a tiger with a mane. It was found from the House of the Faun, dating to the end of the second century BC. It is one of similar mosaics with felines found in Delos, Pella and Pompeii. The House of the Faun has many exotic mosaics.
