A while back I met a Chinese friend on Xaiohongshu who explained to me some history that I was never taught in school about China's past with Japan. As a fan of both cultures, I decided to educate myself out of respect for my friend. Today's reading is The Rape Of Nanking, once that's done, I have China's War with Japan, 1937-1945: The Struggle for Survival by Rana Mitter. After that will be The Search For Modern China by Jonathan D. Spence.

@cryptadamist Even crazier is tue story of #JohnRabe (which isn't taught about in #Germany!) Who as #Ambassador for #NaziGermany basically pissed off #Japan by intervening in #Nanking and saving several Chinese lives.

Lets just say he's a kinda weird exception of the norm...

On December 13, 1937 the #Japanese captured the city of #Nanking. Following the capture of the city, a six-week reign of terror was exacted on the resident population, but more specifically the cities garrison force. According to the best scholarly estimates, it would seem between 3,400 to 9,530 civilians and 18,500-52,000 soldiers were killed.
