I screened a #documentary tonight for the #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation called #YouCanCallMeRoger.

What began as a retirement video for longtime chief #RogerAugustine became something much bigger when revelations of mass unmarked graves of #Indigenous children came to light during the production of the video.

We hear from a diverse set of voices including several chiefs, and even former prime minister of canada Paul Martin.

If you're interested in learning about the horrors of the #canadianResidentialSchoolSystem, this film has several first-hand accounts. The film is equal parts horrifying and enraging, and uplifting and inspiring.

“Aboriginal peoples’ right to self-determination must be integrated into Canada’s constitutional and legal framework and civic institutions, in a manner consistent with the principles, norms, and standards of the Declaration. Aboriginal peoples in Canada have Aboriginal and Treaty rights.
They have the right to access and revitalize their own laws and governance systems within their own communities and in their dealings with governments. They have a right to protect and revitalize their cultures, languages, and ways of life. They have the right to reparations for historical harms.”

Canadians call them “Residential Schools” but they were concentration camps for children. It was government-sanctioned genocide. And it is recent history.
I was 19 years old when the last “residential school” closed in Canada.

@cbcnews @british-columbia-cbcnews "Residential school denial is a terrible, racist sickness that is given public expression with impunity in this province and in this country." Absolutely!

The #CallsToAction are an eminently sensible & humane response to a dark stain on Canada's history that we must address if we are to truly believe we are a decent and upstanding People. #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation #TruthAndReconciliation #cdnpoli

I noticed this sign posted on the fence of the memorial church, which hadn't been there in the spring. Juxtaposed next to the building that was healing for some while wounding for others, I feel like it embodies the way we move towards full reconciliation: navigating the both/and of so many human experiences; doing so imperfectly; yet, with a commitment to keep showing up to the conversation.

Because it was not okay; it was never okay. 6/7

Photo of a sign on a fence post reading: The McDougall Stoney Mission Society stands with Indigenous communities across Canada. #EveryChildMatters."

McDougall Memorial United Church can be seen in the photo's background.

In Canada, even before #NationalDayForTruthAndReconciliation was established, Sept 30 was marked as #OrangeShirtDay, to acknowledge--and in the case of white people, to own up to & make amends for--the harm and trauma of #ResidentialSchools to Indigenous children and their families. It was not okay; it was never okay. 5/7
