While my knowledge of American football is .... limited, there is a numismatic link for the game I can appreciate - a special coin for the coin toss! Renown numismatist Jeff Garrett helped create a restrike of the Libertas Americana medal with the NFL logo and "HEADS" and "TAILS" on its respective sides for the toss coin. Read more: coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n0

Also pictured, the original Libertas Americana medal from 1781 today's piece is based off. Images & description of that piece from Numista: en.numista.com/65432

I hope your team won!

Via a Bsky post by @ewg118 I see that there's been "A nice update for modern-era numismatists: place of issue (place of intended circulation, as opposed to production) is now a mappable layer throughout the ANS collection and other Numishare projects, thanks to Geonames integration"

Forging coins isn't new - this E-Sylum article covers some of the most ancient forgers: coinbooks.org/v29/esylum_v29n0

I've previously written about my own Augustus Denarius "Fouree" from ancient Rome:

New technical bloggage from @ewg118 : "Improving searchability using Natural Language Processing and Wikidata"

numishare.blogspot.com/2026/01

> The Python Natural Language Processing Toolkit and FastAPI form the foundation for new, major improvements in the searchability of various numismatic projects, beginning with American Numismatic Society type corpora such as OCRE and Hellenistic Royal Coinages. These improvements currently apply to all online type corporate published by the ANS and are slowly reindexing in the ANS collections database, MANTIS, to improve large swath's of the ANS's collection of Greek and Roman coins that have been linked to these coin type URIs. This work began in the fall and was finally put into production over the course of December 2025.

Rare Celtic gold coins found in Swiss bog may reveal ancient ritual offerings

Two extremely rare Celtic gold coins that were found in a woodland near Arisdorf in northwestern Switzerland are providing new information about the early phases of coinage in the area and ritual practices dating back more than 2,000 years. The gold coins were found in a follow-up survey and date back to around the middle and second half of the 3rd century BCE, making them among the oldest known Celtic coins found in Switzerland...

Here's a coin which looks better in hand than in my poor photos. Rome, 336 - 342 AD.

Two soldiers holding spiers and shields, military standard between them.

Issued under a few different emperors, I can get "constans" as the start of the obverse inscription, and between that and the portrait, I'm going with "Constans" but happy to be cvorrected (and happy for a mint if anyone can read that in the exergue of the reverse (under the soldiers)).

This weekend is both the local #anime convention and the annual #numismatics show/bourse.

They used to be scheduled for different halls in the same building, but rarely on the same weekend. Sadly, they're 20km apart now so I'll have to split dates.

The crossover potential would have been interesting... what would a good cosplay be? Are there many characters that are specifically portrayed as coin collectors? I keep thinking of Flins in Genshin, but surely there are others.

Ok #MysteryCoin fans, who can identify this old piece?

It will be newsletter time soon so do subscribe if you're not already and the answer will be in there!

I do like coins which are the outliers - the first, the last, the smallest, or, in this case, the largest. This is the largest silver coin in the world. A 1,750 ounce (Over 56 kilos!), one million CFA Francs coin issued in 2016 by the Ivory Coast. Google tells me the spot price for silver is around 45,000 CFA / oz, meaning the silver content is worth nearly 79 million CFA, making the face value quite cheap.

As we come to the end of the Christmas season, celebrating the birth of Christ, here is a medallion featuring the reason Jesus came to us, from John 3:16. Let's take a couple of verses either side for more context:

John 3:14 "Just as Moses lifted up the snake in the wilderness, so the Son of Man must be lifted up,

15 that everyone who believes may have eternal life in him.”

16 For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life.

17 For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him.

18 Whoever believes in him is not condemned, but whoever does not believe stands condemned already because they have not believed in the name of God’s one and only Son."
