Well that worked out well... I used my propane heat last night until bed time. Set the heat pump to come on in 7hrs set to 66F. It did just that, and I awoke to a reasonable 58F in the trailer and batteries at 80%. Then I made coffee, turned on the propane heater, and turned off the heat pump.

Getting a little bit of solar - maybe 300W - enough to cover my loads plus 7.5A to the battery. But even if not, I could probably continue with this routine for up to 4 days without sun.

Trying to figure out my priorities for this week.

I need to get on with the floor in the trailer. I need to get the heat pump installed. I need to get my panels moved to a sunnier area further away and wired in series to prevent losses. I have more fuses to install in the solar cabinet. I have the means to start experimenting with a sand battery. I need to establish some sort of weather/rodent resistant storage so I can start getting my stuff moved up here and stop paying for storage. I need to investigate the issue with my daily driver.

3 months of non-stop car problems have gotten me so far behind that just figuring out where to start is daunting now.

Downright toasty inside the trailer now at 43F. lol. Of course, had to take my batteries down to 40% to achieve that.

Looks to be a sunny day though. I'll probably plug into camp's solar once its batteries are topped off to goose mine back up. I'm getting nervous hovering around 50% all the time. Want to get back to 100% so all the monitors re-calibrate and I'm ready for whatever's next weather wise.

I'm over here like Grandpa Simpson. Literally going out every few minutes and yelling & shaking a fist at this one cloud.

I carefully tested that it was sunny enough to fire up the hot water heater by plugging my solar in and gradually upping the charge to my battery until I saw camp's main panels produce more than 4.5kW.

Then I unplugged and fired up the water heater. All was fine with the panels producing plenty for the first 30 minutes. Now this cloud keeps taunting me. dropping solar at times down to 2k when I need at least 2x that.

Rain total at Pine Mountain Inn so far 1.71"

We've been blessed with some un-forecast sun at the moment for a break. 3kW of solar coming into camp's 7kW array with the batteries nearly 40 minutes into an absorb charge.

My batteries at 69% after making coffee with 30A beyond my usage coming in, so probably 1kW out of my 2200W array. (I have to go out and look in my solar cabinet to get an actual figure)

Let's hope this continues through to sunset. It would be really nice not to have to run the generator today.

Batteries from #solar dropoff to solar start (about 18h right now) drop about 15%. I get enough solar most days to recover that 15%.

With no solar during storms, an extra 6hrs at that consumption rate would be 11% for 26%/day. but in reality, I'm using more power during those hours, so more like 33%. Which means I'm set for a 3 day storm, but any more than that requires supplemental charging.

And post storm, I need about 4 days of sun to recharge to 100% until I get more panels. This is pretty much tracking with real world experience up here so far.

Fingers crossed I recover that full 15% today before the rains settle in again.

Trailer roof leaks secured against the next storm.

White trash bags both under and over the plexiglass skylights. Secured with bungie cords this time. then an improvised cover over it all.

The bulkier fan/skylight doesn't have a good means of using bungie cords, so held taut by a bunch of bricks lining the whole thing. Then a sheet of aluminum over the whole shebang.

OK. Time for storm recovery/next storm prep. I'm snagging an extra 2kW of battery charging from our main solar system which is at 100% already. I should reach 100% by 3p before solar starts dropping off.

Then I need to better seal the openings on the trailer roof.

Then start clearing silt out of infiltration ponds and beefing up the berms on the erosion channels with it.

Still coming down hard at times up here. 11.2" total so far.

My batteries are at 62% after 42hrs without solar. I will definitely make it through another day and night. And possibly make it through to potential sun on Saturday with some conservation.

But we are likely to run the generator for another couple hours today for camp's batteries, and I will definitely tap into it after the first hour to recoup about 5%. Same will probably happen Friday for 5%. and I can always plug into our backup batteries to get another 5-10%.

I'm fairly well sized with my 16kWh bank and current usage. About 3.5 days capacity. Most SoCal storms are a little shorter than that in duration - unless this 4-7 day stuff is a new norm. But when I get the heat pump going, that will change the equation. But I can also just swap to propane heat during storms.

hoo boy. it's cold in the trailer this morning. batteries at 40% but I've fired up the little 500W heater in addition to the propane to take some of the edge off (it's convective heat while the catalytic heater is radiative). It's sunny out, so I expect a decent amount of solar to make up for the little luxury. I also ran the kettle briefly at the same time. Good to know the 3600W inverter can handle that without so much as a hiccup.
