Met this little fun guy on my walk in the woods today. Was kind of him to let me take a couple of photos, warts and all 😃

Foraging situation: No edible boletes of any kind (summer ceps, penny buns, pinewood king boletes,...) to be found anywhere and very few other edible mushrooms with the exception of horn of plenty and yellow foot mushrooms (photos 2 and 3). It's still possible to collect chestnuts though.

Love is in the air, in the whisper of the tree...

A photo of two "Siamese twin" penny bun mushrooms (Boletus edulis) growing attached to each other at the stem and their caps tightly touching due to lack of space to grow in. They look a lot like two embraced lovers kissing.

The shaded side of the base of this beech tree's trunk was literally carpeted with invading hairy bracket mushrooms (Trametes hirsuta). I thought it looked cool how they changed in colour from white-ish gray leathery top to subdued Bordeaux spongy underside with the changing angle as I walked past them. And when I saw this xylophagous saprophyte, a plant pathogen, itself being invaded by long hairy moss poking through them I thought that's it, I've simply got to share this with you!

Long strands of moss poking out of a tight bunch of hairy bracket mushrooms (Trametes hirsuta) on a beech tree trunk. A few Gymnopus dryophilus mushrooms can be seen growing next to the tree in the background, too.Side view of the tree trunk mentioned in the post's main body shows numerous "scales" of fruiting bodies of hairy bracket mushrooms (Trametes hirsuta) with the tight space between them covered in moss. From this side, other parts of the base of the tree are visible that are completely covered in moss with few or no fungi on them.A single Gymnopus dryophilus mushroom growing in front of the beech tree covered in moss and hairy bracket mushrooms

Have I got even more mushrooming news for you! Even more species of fungi cropped up today that weren't to be found before, and here's some of them. See photo descriptions for more info...

A couple of perfect specimens of young pinewood king bolete mushrooms (Boletus pinophilus) growing side by side. Actually, there's three of them in the photo, another, smaller one is barely visible in the bottom right corner of the photo. These are choice edible mushrooms of excellent taste and texture and can be used in all kinds of dishes and preserve well for later use, too. Top find of the day!A numerous crop of sulphur tuft mushrooms (Hypholoma fasciculare) invading a decaying trunk of a fallen tree. They're poisonous, bitter and of off-putting scent when older but they can, in my opinion, be cute in a tight bunch like the one on the photo. Plus, they glow fluorescent green when illuminated by UV light!!A photo of a single violet webcap mushroom (Cortinarius violaceus). Or, the Deep Purple mushroom, as I call it :) The mushroom is completely dark purple, stem to cap and its cap has a lovely, suede texture. They're supposedly edible if heat treated but of indiscernible taste so I don't bother collecting them. They're otherwise not particularly rare and can grow in large numbers in select patches of the woods when conditions are right.

And this was the top prize of yesterday's walk.

#Foraging #Mushrooms #Fungi #Photography #SamsungNX #NX300 #16mm #PancakeLens

A single, young penny bun mushroom (Boletus edulis) growing out of tall thin grass and some blueberry bushes on a bright sunny autumn day. Mushroom's cap is slightly indented towards the top due to slug damage, but that's really a good sign for foragers that the mushroom will be free of fungus gnat larvae as even slugs won't touch those. And, since it exposes cap's inner colour, it also makes it more visible as they can otherwise be easily missed.

With every new day, the woods produce new species of mushrooms that grow in autumn in temperate mixed forest. So I'm going on foraging hikes nearly every day or at least I try to, time and weather permitting. On top of mushrooms, I've also collected a lot of chestnuts and some hazelnuts and walnuts, too. Here's some photos of mushrooms I encountered during yesterday's walk. See photo descriptions for more info...

#Foraging #Mushrooms #Fungi #Photography #SamsungNX #NX300 #16mm #PancakeLens

A bunch of young specimens of slippery jack mushrooms (Suillus luteus) growing in grass, moss and dwarf fern. Their white partial veil, attached to their upper stem, still encloses the spores. The stems are snow white and their caps are chestnut brown in colour. The skin on their cap is shiny and wet in appearance. I collected a few of these for a mixed mushroom stew. Young specimens' stem isn't too tough so the whole mushroom can be used, except for the skin on their caps that needs to be peeled off as it would otherwise release slime during cooking. They're not the tastiest mushrooms around on their own, but they do add to the umami flavour in mixed mushroom dishes.A young specimen of the blusher mushroom (Amanita rubescens) growing on a clear patch of a mixed forest covered in brown and gray, decaying conifer needles, fallen leaves, some twigs and a couple of acorns next to it. Its stem is at this stage still entirely white while its cap is semi-lobed and partially covered in warts. Blushers are technically edible if heat treated but, due to possible confusion with the false blusher mushroom (Amanita pantherina) that is seriously toxic, I never collect them.Three young specimens of a yellow russula mushroom (Russula claroflava). They grow in slightly muddy soil covered in fallen conifer needles and other decaying matter. Mushrooms are still a bit dirtied on their caps by this mud they had to pop out of. Their stems are entirely white and their caps are pale yellow in colour. They're edible but not of a particularly distinct taste. They can also be confused with some other very similar looking species of mushrooms that are mildly toxic and cause symptoms of mild poisoning so I'm not inclined towards picking them.A near perfect specimen of a penny bun mushroom (Boletus edulis) growing in thick undergrowth of mostly blueberry bushes in a sunny mixed forest. It's a fully developed but still relatively young specimen with the spongy underside of its cap slowly turning into its ultimately green colour but is still creamy yellow-green at this stage. Its stem is club-shaped with the thicker, slightly bulbous bottom part mostly white and becoming ginger-brown towards the remaining two thirds of it. Its cap is hazel with a hint of orange in colour and is illuminated by strong sunlight. This is a choice edible mushroom so we had it, along with some other boletes, in a sauce with udon noodles for lunch today and it was delicious!

Sunny with a chance of Puffballs. Take a Parasol with you! 🍄

A trio of very young Common Puffball (Lycoperdon perlatum) mushrooms growing side by side in a cluster. They were still very tiny, pine needles next to them look big in comparison. If you ever wondered why these mushrooms are called Puffballs (Lycoperdon perlatum) this is the reason. There's no better way to describe them, really. The front puffball that's in focus is thimble-sized and looks a lot like Raffaello white chocolate coconut candy.A perfect specimen of a Parasol mushroom (Macrolepiota procera). I'm gonna have this one breaded with homemade rémoulade sauce tomorrow. Yum!A couple of Parasol mushrooms (Macrolepiota procera) growing in the thicket of a sunny mixed coniferous forest. One of them is rather obvious, can you find the other one?

While I was out foraging, the garden had a visitor from another planet. Well, it looks like it could be from another planet, but it's just a caterpillar of an Old World Swallowtail (Papilio machaon). A species of butterfly that's beautiful (and reasonably big) also after metamorphosis.

#Wildlife #Butterfly #Caterpillar #Photography #SamsungNX #Rangefinder #Zoom #DetailPhotography #PancakeLens

Photo shows a closeup of an Old World Swallowtail caterpillar on a wet soil on a sunny day. Caterpillar is roughly 7cm in length and 1cm in diameter, having 13 sections, 11 of those have a pair of conical legs on each side at the bottom with the remaining two sections being its head and the tail. Caterpillar has smooth skin that is bright and vivid, almost fluorescent lime-green with thin black rings between each section and thicker black half-rings tapering towards its underside with equidistant and longitudinally symmetrical intense orange dots over them, 6 dots per section. Very strong contrasts and vivid complementary colors of its color scheme make it appear out of place on the loose, subdued color garden soil.Photo shows a closeup of an Old World Swallowtail caterpillar on a wet soil on a sunny day. Today's foraging hike was already slightly more productive regarding variety of mushrooms that (re)started to grow, but the forest still needs a few more days of stabler weather to fully recuperate from the shock of a sudden wet & cold spell the previous week. Still, the pizza I'll use them on tomorrow will be lovely, I'm sure. See photo descriptions for mushroom info.
