well, i did execute a dd-wipe before, via #PartedMagic (the "live" boot option that doesn't require more than 2gig of RAM)
âŠi just "took off, and nuked the whole place, from orbit"
it's "âŠthe only way to be sure" đ

Resetting my Dell/Wyse 3040 thin client, using the integrated tools.
I'm still not quite sure whether i should re-sell, or re-use it as a secondary #PiHole #DNS filter.
I've measured it at 6.5 Watts PEAK-ish, usually more like 3.5W, running #PartedMagic (using an SEM6000 smart plug)
8gig of storage, 2gig of ram, Atom x5-Z8350 quad-core
*sigh* it's 20 bucks on eBay, or another PiHole âŠanyone, Bueller, Bueller, Bueller? đ
I haven't tried the restore process, yet. But I kinda love the #RescueZilla distro (a #CloneZilla GUI[?]) - it's less complicated than pure text mode. I might keep using this, instead of #PartedMagic. (PM still has the best GUI for SATA/ NVMe secure erase, though [afaik])

Please, for fox' sake, wipe your storage devices BEFORE you sell them!
I've just got a SATA M.2 SSD in the mail, with bloody Turkish lingo Windows 11 on it!
âŠfor the giggles, i've booted it up on my test rig - that's how i know it was win11.
âŠjust now, i've nuked its contents via #PartedMagic (S)ATA-Secure-Erase. Apparently, i'm its 1st "user" who ever ran a "long" SMART self-test on the thing. *sigh*
#privacy #security
âŠđ§” i wouldn't even have to "burn" a whole "drive-write" of the SSD, if i can get #PartedMagic to import my #ZFS pool (it's upgraded to the Ubuntu-23.10-CURRENT feature set).
Using #CloneZilla, in a backup-restore scenario, would only "burn" the currently allocated capacity worth of PE cycles on the SSD.
#NTFS is handled quite well, nowadays! CloneZilla wouldn't have to read/write the full length of the partition - it's smart like that, not even considering compression.
Before going to bed, i booted the corrupted VM into #PartedMagic. xfs_repair has been printing dots ever since. I guess walking ~750 gix takes a while on a 4c/4t i3-9100F.
EDIT: it didn't finish when i woke up, so i aborted it. See thread below to learn what happened next.

Parted Magic Distro Drops 32-Bit Support, Now Powered by Linux 5.8 and OverlayFS
