I’m teaching first year med students this week; they are only about 6 weeks into school.

I take a few moments after one of my sessions to share some of my art and remind them to make space for the things and people outside of medicine that are important to them.

I certainly didn’t hear this enough in training. Wish I had.

I don’t know why I have had a greasy post-it note on my desk that says “disseminated malignant epithelioid tumor of liver” for months, but I am now going to throw it away. #pathmastodon

How can we get ahead of the next #pandemic?

Syndromic molecular testing for #infectiousdisease could offer a solution – and is already used to distinguish between respiratory diseases with similar symptoms, such as #influenza, #RSV, and #COVID19. But testing must be combined with pandemic preparedness networks in which stakeholders from science, medicine, industry, and government collaborate on prevention and mitigation efforts.

propublica.org/article/unitedh Absolutely critical reading for anyone involved in health care in America (patients and caregivers!). Patients with chronic illnesses are at risk of depression and PTSD (and bankruptcy and homelessness…) due to for-profit insurance companies putting profits over care

We don’t yet fully understand the mechanisms between peripheral neuropathy and type II diabetes. However, new research has pointed to a number of potential biomarkers that may help us predict which patients are at greater risk of nerve damage in the future.

Do you know the difference between #digitalpathology and digitizing #pathology? One is a static tool… the other is a dynamic process that involves learning, collaboration, and a desire for growth.

Catarina Eloy, Junya Fukuoka, Anil Parwani, and Colin White explain more.

How do we access thousands of whole-slide images quickly while still retaining important clinical information? Until now, bigger libraries have meant slower searches – but #DeepLearning might just have a solution.

Does d-alanine have potential as a biomarker of viral illness severity – and perhaps even as a therapeutic option?

With #influenza, #COVID19, #RSV, and more on the rise, Tomonori Kimura and colleagues have turned their attention to new ways of evaluating disease severity, stratifying patients, and treating those at highest risk.
