Somehow have been a Mac user since the early 2000s, but had never used @flyingmeat’s Acorn image editor before yesterday. Bought it on a whim, no trial testing, and within *moments* of using knew it was the right choice to finally get on board. 🫡

#PickOfTheWeek - #SleaterKinney – Little Rope (2024). Completed in the wake of personal tragedy (Carrie Brownstein's mother and step-father passed in 2022), SK's latest sounds less aggrieved than determined to forge onwards in a complex world. "Hell" sounds its bells at the start, before "Say it Like You Mean It" and "Hunt You Down" meld SK's bristling indie rock with new wave textures. "Untidy Creature" is one of those tunes I'll play on repeat, feet planted by the stereo.

#PickOfTheWeek - #Magnum – Here Comes the Rain (2024). This new release by the stalwart English rock band finds them in hyperdrive on the bracing opener, "Run into the Shadows" and string-embellished "Some Kind of Treachery." Brethren like Styx and Marillion echo in Magnum's supersized arrangements, with tight harmonies and huge choruses.

Sadly, the album is a swan song for songwriter-guitarist Tony Clarkin, who died January 7, five days before the release date.

#Sprints - Letter to Self (2024). This new release is the debut album by a Dublin quartet led by the fiery Karla Chubb, who sounds like PJ Harvey channeling early Chrissie Hynde. The band is a pop-punk quartet alternating quiet, brooding passages with eruptions into sonic fury. Pixies, IDLES, and early Siouxie inhabit the group's DNA. Opener "Ticking" is a tense wakeup call, and "Shaking Their Hands" is a scorching statement of purpose.

Wine is made in every state in the US but that doesn't mean that all wine is made from grapes. There are also fruit wines that can range from dry to sweet. I have had very little experience with fruit wines. But after tasting the Bluet from Maine, my interest has been peaked. A beautiful dark purple color, if you did not know any better, you might think it was a Lambrusco but Bluet is a sparkling wine made from wild blueberries and is the Please The Palate #pickoftheweek

I braved the traffic of Los Angeles to head downtown this week. It took more than an hour and a half to drive 10 miles, which was frustrating. I arrived at the Proper Hotel in downtown LA and took the elevator to the Penthouse floor, feeling a little stressed from the traffic. I was greeted with a glass of fresh, aromatic rosé and took a look at the view in front of me and I began to relax. More wines were poured, tapas were tray-passed, and heat lamps warmed us in the fresh evening air. Tasting the wines of Bodega Colomé from Argentina with winemaker Thibaut Delmotte on the Cara Cara Rooftop at the Downtown LA Proper Hotel was the Please The Palate pick of the week.
