Neapolitan culture informs design of Manhattan’s SIMÒ Pizza by Büro Koray Duman

An open kitchen and shelving made of Italian volcanic stone feature in a Greenwich Village pizzeria designed by architecture firm Büro Koray Duman.

SIMÒ Pizza was started in 2018 by the Naples-born chef Simone Falco and offers Neapolitan pizza and other fare made with high-quality ingredients. This is the eatery's second location, the other being in the Meatpacking District in New York City.

Büro Koray Duman added an open kitchen to the design of the pizzeria

Situated on University Place, the new shop occupies the ground floor of a 19th-century building that once housed the famed Hotel Albert. The rectangular space totals 1,400 square feet (130 square metres).

Büro Koray Duman – which has offices in Manhattan and Istanbul – aimed to design a space that celebrates historic New York and Naples, while also embodying SIMÒ's mission to be an authentic and affordable pizzeria. The design is meant to be both sophisticated and welcoming.

The concept of "pattern as heritage" informed the restaurant's interiors

"The design centres around three concepts: cooking as performance, pattern as heritage, and the piazza as social space," the firm said.

A glazed wall offers views into the bright and airy shop. At the front, the team placed an open kitchen that was inspired by the traditional outdoor kiosks found in Naples.

Italian green marble tops the chef's counter

"Opening the view to the preparation of food offers diners a chance to engage in the performance of cooking," the architects said.

"A diagonal grid of strung lights illuminates the kitchen, further amplifying the reference to courtyard social spaces."

Volcanic stone Neopolitan shelving lines the wall

The cooking area is partly enclosed by milled-wood walls with a geometric motif based on SIMÒ's logo. A chef's counter is topped with Italian green marble.

Opposite the kitchen is tall shelving made of volcanic stone from Naples – a material typically used for building facades.

Studio Wok designs cavernous pizza restaurant to recall rocky coves of Sardinia

"The three-dimensional, angled pattern of the shelving adds a textural layer to the space," the team said.

Additional texture is provided by the eatery's tin ceiling and mosaic tile flooring, both of which are original to the space.

The dining area features wallpaper patterned with a Caputo flour graphic

Beyond the kitchen is the dining area, where one finds banquette seating constructed of birch plywood. Colourful wallpaper with a Caputo flour graphic lends an intimate feel to the space.

More seating is provided outdoors, where round cedar tables are surrounded by pots of Mediterranean plants and herbs.

The location in Greenwich Village is the second SIMÒ Pizza to open in New York City

Büro Koray Duman has completed a variety of projects in New York and beyond, including a Williamsburg apartment with staggered bookshelves and a West Village eatery with a three-dimensional lattice made of stained poplar.

Studio Wok designs cavernous pizza restaurant to recall rocky coves of Sardinia

Studio Wok has completed Myrto, a pizzeria on Sardinia that is designed to reflect the island's earth tones and wind-swept granite rocks.

Located in the town of Porto Cervo on the Costa Smeralda, the restaurant resembles a cave with curved, sandy pink plaster walls, cement floors and arched window openings.

The interior is a "tribute to the essence of" the region, explained Studio Wok.

The Myrto pizzeria by Studio Wok is centred by a green-tiled counter (top and above)

"When we think of this part of Sardinia, we think of granite rocks shaped by the wind," the practice said.

"The power of the wind erodes and carves out the granite formations, turning them into architectural structures that can be lived in. The restyling project for the Myrto restaurant is an opportunity to pay tribute to this area and to tell its story."

The restaurant's ceilings are curved to resemble a cave

The "homely and intimate" space is minimally furnished with custom pieces, such as a tiled counter rendered in different hues of green to echo the colour of local scrubs.

These cooler tones are contrasted against burgundy-coloured lights, designed by Michael Anastassiades for Flos, which are used throughout the restaurant.

A large outdoor patio at the rear of the space is treated as an extension of the interior. Here, strips of fabric form a permeable roof that reacts to the wind and provides a glimpse of the sky beyond.

Studio Wok, which was founded by Marcello Bondavalli, Nicola Brenna and Carlo Alberto Tagliabue in 2012, has previously converted a barn with pebble walls into a country home.

Other cave-like bar and restaurant interiors featured on Dezeen include this wine shop in Spain by Zooco Estudio, where architectural elements based on wine bottles and barrels create a contemporary vaulted ceiling.

Meanwhile in Mexico City, local firm Michan Architecture hung a pair of huge concrete lights over the bar of a restaurant to create a cavernous atmosphere.
