The Well of Mimir Rune Cards

A modern, inclusive interpretation of the Elder #Futhark in a deck of 24 cards plus booklet

NOW LIVE ON KICKSTARTER!!

kickstarter.com/projects/angel

Story

The #WellofMimir holds all of human experience.

Nestled within the roots of #Yggsdrasil, the #WorldTree, the well of #Mimir is the wellspring of memory, inspiration, and knowledge. It holds the eye of Odin, pledged in sacrifice for cosmic wisdom and the secrets of the runes.

But the #runes are not just a quaint relic of the distant past. Nor are they, in essence, the property of modern neo-fascists or white supremacists.

The runes are the building blocks of language in Northern Europe. And language is #magical – it’s how humans explain and describe their world, it’s how we communicate with each other and the gods, it’s how we give shape to our experiences. The runes, like the letters, symbols, and words of many pre-Christian languages, hold within them the memory, inspiration, and wisdom of the #Ancestors.

We can use the runes to help us understand our experience in this world and to peel back the veils that obscure our clear seeing.

The runes speak to human experience—past, present, and future

About the Deck

The Well of Mimir Rune Card Deck contains 24 cards, each representing one letter within the Elder Futhark; plus a full-color, 36-page instruction booklet.

Each card displays the rune, along with artwork created by spirit-led artist Angela Raincatcher to illustrate a central concept of the rune.

Each card is made of black-core matte card stock and measures 2.75" x 4.75" with rounded corners and UV protective coating.

Each deck comes in a full-color designed tuck box and a 36-page instruction booket with images and interpretations for each card.

Higher levels of support include additions, such as:

6" x 4" sticker sheet with all the cards as stickers you can use for journaling and recording your meditations and readings using the rune cards

a hand-made drawstring bag made with fabric designed by Spookishdelight from Spoonflower and red satin cording.

a "thank you" postcard featuring the design for the Fehu card with my well wishes for your prosperity and abundance
your name listed in the instruction booklet included in every deck of cards

About the Artist

Consciously Pagan and polytheist since the late 1980s, Angela Raincatcher has been a priestess, community organizer, and spirit-led artist since the early 2000s. She is a third-degree initiate in The Order of Elemental Mysteries at Two Rivers Sanctuary, the dean of students for Reflections Mystery School, the creator of the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle, and the host of the Polytheism Today podcast.

Angela is a spirit-led visual artist. Her canvas and studio are the crossroads and sacred circle where the physical meets the spiritual to create manifest forms of beauty, healing, and transformation. Angela learns new systems and connects with the gods through study, trance, and making art. This deck is the expression of her work to understand the Elder Futhark runes as spiritual symbols for magick, meditation, and divination.
You can support Angela's service to community.

Any funds raised by this Kickstarter above the amount needed to fulfill supporter rewards will be used to pay for Angela Raincatcher's participation in Going with Grace's Death Doula training, which will provide the skills and knowledge about end-of-life options and transition presence for Angela to serve the polytheist, pagan, and progressive communities in the Washington-Baltimore area.

TITLE: Going to Sacred Space/Between the Worlds

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Hello, lovelies!

I have been laid low this week with a particularly rough head cold lots of sleeping, liquids, and bingeing Schitt’s Creek for the umpteenth time. Thankfully, I was able to get a bunch of stuff done to prepare for going to the Sacred Space/Between the Worlds joint conference before getting sick.

I will be facilitating a conversation and ritual on Thursday, February 19, at 4:00pm, titled “Coins for the Dead.” I’m very excited that Ron Padrn from White Rose Witching and Jess Shoemaker, Death Midwife, will be joining me to help in this ritual to journey to the shores of the river of tears that separates the land of the embodied from the Otherworld and engage in the psychopomp work of helping those souls who are unable to cross over on their own. Experienced practitioners and those new to the work are welcome.

Your Magick Aunties will also be in the vendors’ room all weekend with a variety of artwork and sacred craft to enliven your practice. I will also be launching my Kickstarter campaign for The Well of Mimir Rune Cards! This is a project I have been working on-and-off on for the past couple of years, and I’m thrilled to have it out in the world soon. Before the campaign, you can subscribe to be notified on February 19 when it launches. Rewards will include the 24-card deck with booklet, a hand-made draw-string bag, and sticker sheets!

Well of Mimir Rune Cards, draw-string bag, and sticker sheets

But, as I mentioned at the beginning, what is most important to me to renewing my connections with people in my community. I have been attending this conference since the early 2000s, and these are my people. We have learned together, laughed together, circled together, and cried together. I look forward to seeing people I haven’t seen for a while, getting to spend time sharing conversation with them, and learning what they have been up to.

Beyond the great rituals and classes (and there are quite a few!), this conference grounds me in community. It reminds me of what we can do when we work together, and it shines as a beacon of what polytheism can bring to the world people from different paths, worshipping different gods, sharing sacred space and learning from each other in peace.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

TITLE: Rune Spell for Protecting the Protectors

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Text from the video:

One of the things I use my Well of Mimir Rune Cards for is creating bindrune spells.

First I will set my intention. Today, I want to send protection, strength, and support to the people in Minneapolis and around the U.S. who are out in the streets putting their bodies on the line while protecting their neighbors who are being targeted by masked ICE agents.

Second, I ground, center, and relax my focus. Then I go through my deck and let the runes and images speak to me as I pull out a few cards that support this work. I may pull more cards than I end up using, but that’s OK. Sometimes the ones that seem most obvious at first don’t work with the others or don’t quite fit. I personally like to get it down to 3 cards.

You may notice there is one card, Eihwaz, missing from my deck in this video since it is on my altar for another working.

For this spell, I have selected Mannaz to represent the community and community care, Elhaz for divine protection, and Tiwaz for the moral strength to do what is right in the face of fear.

Once the cards are selected, I light a candle and make my prayers to the gods and spirits I work with to empower my intention to give spiritual protection and support to the resisters, the protectors, the witnesses, and the protestors.

And Fuck ICE!

Blessings from a full and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

TITLE: Runes: Ancient Letters, Modern Experiences

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

One of the ways that I learn new systems is through the creation of art. I started my journey with the Elder Futhark runes with a dream almost 20 years ago. I don’t remember what happened in the dream, but I woke up with a strong image. It looked like a rune, but which one? I had no idea. Luckily, I knew folks who would, so I drew the image and sent it to them.

Jera. I dreamed of Jera. But what did it mean? A cursory look on the Internet (not the most reliable, I agree) told me that Jera often meant “year” or “harvest.” OK, and…

Jera/Harvest from The Well of Mimir Rune Cards by Angela Raincatcher

Over the years (see what I did there?), I have learned that we have to soften the hard boundaries of our thinking and follow our imaginations beyond just the simple words to put ourselves in the shoes of one to whom the harvest is vital. We cannot rush the harvest, nor do we have complete control over it. We plant the seeds and tend the plants as they grow, but there are many variables outside our control, such as pests, bad weather, weeds, just to name a few. And then when the harvest comes, we have a lot of work ahead of us to actually reap what we have sown and worked so hard for.

Over time, I read a couple of books here and there, and talked with folks with much more knowledge and experience than I have. The first image for the runes I was inspired to create was Eihwaz. As I was reading Diana Paxson’s Taking Up the Runes, I was given the mental image of a small yew branch with berries and a skull.

Eihwas/Yew Tree from The Well of Mimir Rune Cards by Angela Raincatcher

One image led to another led to 22 more.

And now I’m launching a Kickstarter to self-publish what I’ve titled “The Well of Mimir Rune Cards.” It’s a deck of 24 full-color cards illustrated by me, along with a 36-page full-color booklet with short interpretations and spreads for divination. These cards can be used for readings and meditative work. For those of us who are more visual learners and readers, these cards can open the world of runes and link them to our daily lives and experiences.

The Kickstarter launches February 19, but until then you can go to the pre-launch page and support the campaign by clicking the “Notify me on launch” button. The more people follow the campaign pre-launch, the more exposure the campaign gets with a broader audience.

With that request, I will leave you with the blessings of Fehu. May wealth and prosperity flow to you and be healthy.

Angela Raincatcher

TITLE: Sing the New Year In

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Earlier this month, Danica Boyce at Euthusiastica posted about the importance of siniging around the mid-winter holidays. She started with, “Since I was little, I knew that singing was magic. It gave me life, and was inseparable from the experience of joy itself. If you felt alive, you sang.”

Like Danica, I loved to sing as a child. I made up songs all the time, even winning a songwriting competition in the 5th grade with some (frankly terrible) song about loving American music. As I got older, singing became more complicated as did my relationship with my father, a musician and high school choir teacher. Singing became less and less about expressing the joys and sorrows of life, and more and more about technical acumen and performance.

Luckily, just as I gave up singing in church and choir performances, I discovered Paganism and found a new context in which singing came from the heart and the fire we circled around. Sometimes, when I am out in nature, no other humans around, just me and the spirits of the land, I begin to sing a wordless tune of praise and thanksgiving. The first time was quite shocking to me, but now I allow my soul to call out to the world whenever it is moved to do so.

Reading Danica’s post inspired me (compelled me?) to write a song to welcome in and bless the new year. I am sharing it with you here. The lyrics are original, but I’m not sure where the melody came fromit feels like it might derive from some other tune that I’m not just remembering. If you recognize it, please let me know.

All of this to encourage you, too, to sing with or without words, a tune familiar or made up on the spot, alone or with others. Let your soul call to the world in love. We need more of that in these dark times.

Blessings from a full and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

Greetings, Friends!

As we move into the holiday season, remember that Jeff Bezos and the Walton family do not need any more of your money but independent artists, like myself, would be over the moon if you purchased their art to gift to your friends and family.

Here are a few ways that you can purchase my work:

I have two linocut/monoprint pieces for sale through the Maryland Art Place’s Under 2500. You can find them (and many other wonderful artworks by Maryland artists) here. Do a search for “Angela” and my work will pop up for you. This virtual sale benefits Maryland Art Place and is active through Friday, November 28, Midnight. If they are still available after that, you can buy from me direct by emailing me at angela.raincatcher@gmail.com.

I also have a few new prints available: Dapper Raven (5” x 8”) and Our hearts are too large (5” x 7”). Both are available with a black mat for $30 each, including shipping in the U.S. You can order those directly from me via PayPal. Please make sure to add the name of the work along with your name and mailing address.

You can also buy images of my work as art prints and on t-shirts and other merch at my Nine Ravens store at Redbubble.com.

If you are interested in any of my oracle decks, you can find them at The Game Crafter. However, if you are local to DC/Baltimore region, you can order the North American Animal Wisdom Oracle from me directly, and I’ll arrange delivery at no charge.

And last but not least, if you have seen any of my pottery on Instagram that entices you, send me an email inquiry or DM.

Blessings from a full and open heart,

TITLE: Living with Uncertainty

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Greetings, Dear Friends!

It’s been a while. I wish I were more regular in my writing. I often open up a new post and then *brain freeze* and my brain won’t hold onto words, thoughts, or any kind of coherent thought.

But I’ve been doing a lot of reading and art making. If you’re on Instagram, I’m @angela.raincatcher (original, I know), and I show most of my artwork and daily short musings there.

Back in May, I visited Greece and had a very intense experience praying to Hades at the Plutonian Cave at Eleusis, of which I will talk more later, but today I want to share a few thoughts on life and death.

Offerings at the Plutonion at Eleusis/Elefsina, Greece

As we move into the season of dying, increasing darkness, and the returning cold of winteram I talking about the changing of the seasons or the current administration and its continuing destruction of everything good and precious in this work?I contemplate the nature of life, both corporeal and incorporeal.

We talk about death as if it were the opposite of life, but it is not. It is a threshold and state change in the phenomenon of life. Death is the end of this corporeal stage of life the time that we spend in this body, in this time, and in this place. Just as birth was its beginning. Life continues on and on, just in different ways and on different dimensions.

Both birth and deathlike all liminal spacesare uncertain, filled with potential, unknowable, dangerous, and sacred. They are both initiations, taking us from one state or stage of life to another, unknown until we cross that threshold. Throughout life we are faced with initiations, or rites of passage. Usually, we can easily talk to someone who has entered puberty, graduated, gotten married, started a family, retired, to get a sense of what to expect. And those people can tell us about their experience, butlike all Mysteriesno matter what we are told or what we think we know, we cannot know without stepping through and crossing the threshold ourselves.

So, I have my thoughts about death, what life might look like after death, the nature of the spirit and soul, and what happens to them as we cross the thresholdand I want to share those sometime soonbut do I know 100%? No, and I can’t until I make that crossing. No one can, even if they have communication with their gods and spirits. They can talk to us all about the afterlife all day, but just like a long-married person telling someone single about being married, we won’t actually know until we go there ourselves.

And don’t worry. . . We will all cross that threshold and see it for ourselves.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela

TITLE: 529 CE was not a good year

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Earlier this week, I finished the book “The Darkening Age: The Christian Destruction of the Classical World” by Catherine Nixey. And while Nixey is an engaging and accessible writer, the content of her book is gutting especially if you are a polytheist and/or Pagan, both of which (as you no doubt know) I am.

Let me just start with the very last paragraph of the book to give you a sense of what I mean:

The lovely statue of Athena, the goddess of wisdom, suffered as badly as the statue of Athena in Palmyra had. Not only was she beheaded, she was then, a final humiliation, placed face-down in the corner of a courtyard to be used as a step. Over the coming years, her back would be worn away as the goddess of wisdom was ground down by generations of Christian feet. The “triumph” of Christianity was complete.

Oof!

Ouch!

In clear, compelling prose, Nixey lays out how, in its first 200 years in authorityfrom Emperor Constantine’s conversion to Christianity in 312 CE to the legal prohibition of any teachers who “labored under the insanity of paganism” in 529 CEthe Church led a concerted and sustained campaign to destroy pagan religion, culture, and people. In story after horrific story, Nixey lays out how Christian clergy and monks incited angry mobs of disaffected men to tear down temples and schools, burn libraries, and harass and beat to death pagan priests, philosophers, and adherents. The now-Christian Roman Empire and its client states passed laws making it harder and harder to worship in any way but the new Christian way.

In less than 50 years after Emperor Constantine converted and stated that all religions should be tolerated, offering sacrifices to the gods became punishable by the death penalty. In another 50 years or so, pagan ceremonies were outlawed with the same cost (execution) for those who led them.

To many of these early Church fathers, including Augustine of Hippo (354-430CE), whose followers often operated outside the law and were never punished, the terror visited upon the pagan public was the point: “Where there is terror, there is salvation . . . Oh, merciful savagery!”

I had to read this book in short spurts as I found myself angered and depressed by turnsnot only because of tragedies of the past, but because of what we are facing today in the U.S. with the rise to power of authoritarian fascist would-be emperors, the destruction of our governmental institutions and the war on science perpetuated by DOGE, and the culture wars whipped up by Christian nationalists and white supremacists intent on dividing and controlling the masses. It was impossible not to see the parallels between then and now.

With less than 10% of all classical literature and knowledge surviving into the modern era, the history of the late Antique world rewritten and/or forgotten for centuries, and religious monotheist fanatics running roughshod above the law, I can only imagine in horror our future.

And of course, I wonder how we can preserve the scientific and medical knowledge we have gained in the last 200 years, how we can protect the rights and the lives of our most vulnerable and marginalized communities, and how we save ourselves and our Mother Earthand if we even can.

I don’t have the answer to that, but I believe in witnessing and not turning away. And I recommend reading Nixey’s book and talking with your communities and your loved ones about these issues.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

TITLE: Community Mandala in Action

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

The community mandala created in collaboration with attendees at the 2024 Sacred Space Conference is up for auction to fund scholarships for the 2026 Sacred Space-Between the Worlds joint conference next February.

Place Your Bid

I wrote about the construction and symbolism of the mandala before, but there is a bit more on the auction website.

The finished painting is 36” x 36” and would sell for $975. I donated the piece to the Sacred Space Foundation to auction because I wanted this piece to support my spiritual community, not only culturally, energetically, and spiritually, but also financially (MALKUTH!!!)

By the way, I will be vending at this year’s conference under the auspices of Your Magick Aunties with the fabulous Ketzirah haMa’agelet, and I’m teaching a class (really more facilitating a conversation) on the topic “Loving the Ugly to Heal the Wounded Earth,” on Friday evening, 8:45pm - 10:15pm.

The description I wrote for conversation read, “Pollution, mining, and superfund sites are not pretty. But in order to love and heal our Mother Earth fully, we have to be willing to look at and excavate these wounds so that we can spiritually, energetically, and where possible physically clean them out. We have to love our Mother not just in her beauty and bounty, but also in her scars and her wounding. In this workshop, we will discuss how to find these wounded places close to where we live. We will explore how to interact safely with the spirits of a wounded place and craft magic and ritual to support their healing. We will also brainstorm ways to blend our magical work with physical clean-up efforts.”

I’m looking forward to seeing a bunch of you at the conference, and I would love to hear from those of you I won’t see.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

TITLE: Divine Diversity

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Last month, I spoke about divine diversity and inclusion at the Mattatuck Unitarian Universalist Society in Connecticut. I distilled my thoughts from a few episodes of Season 1 of the Polytheism Today podcast: What is Polytheism?, What is a God?, and Divine Diversity. I encourage you to check out those episodes if you enjoy this video.

I wish I could share with you the wonderful comments and conversations I had with congregation members after the service and during the fellowship. Some were curious and open to a perspective they had not considered before. Some were familiar with Wicca and were excited to hear about the gods in their church. Some wondered if I thought the gods were “real” and if they talked to me (the answer is “yes” to both). These comments and questions have given some a lot to think about, which may fuel future writing or podcast episodes.

With all that is going on in our current political climate in the U.S., I think it is vital for those of us who can speak publicly about polytheism, the diversity of the gods, and link that to diversity in our natural and cultural world, to do so. There is another way there are MANY other ways to be in relationship with each other and the world around us. Ways that are nurturing and liberating. Ways in which the whole person and the whole of existence is embraced and valued. I, for one, think that polytheism as an intellectual and spiritual construct and worldview is a way forward that we should consider. That’s my flag in the sand.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela Raincatcher

TITLE: Prayers for Hard Times

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

Greetings, Friends!

The last few weeks have been filled with uncertainty and chaos. There have been moments where, in the middle of doing the most mundane things, I have felt like the foundations under my feet have been pulled awayand I am completely rootless and untethered. My mind reels with a whirlpool of broken, incomprehensible thoughts. I am stunned and unmoving for a few minutes until I have found my center and ground again in my body.

I want to reach for my Gods, my Ancestors, and my Allies in prayer, but finding the words can be frustrating in the moment of distress.

See! It fits in the hand!

In my own desire to have such words to anchor me, comfort my soul, and steel my spine, I created this pocket-size booklet of prayers I have written over the years. It’s free for you to download, print, and share. It prints on one side of an 8.5” x 11” piece of paper. You can see how to fold it into a booklet here.

I hope that these prayers help you through these times.

Blessings from a strong and open heart,

Angela

TITLE: Making a Community Mandala

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

“It became increasingly plain to me that the mandala is the center. It is the exponent of all paths. It is the path to the center, to individuation.” Carl Jung

Over the years, I have created mandalas for the chakras, the elements, the sephirot, and the wheel of the year. Many times after I take a class, attend a lecture, participate in a ritual, or read about a spiritual topic, I find myself making art about it as a way to sink deeply into the Mysteries of each and get some “hands-on” experience with these spiritual energies. The mandala creates a container that aptly holds my explorations and reflects them back to me.

On the personal level, creating mandalas can be both a healing and an introspective practice that allows us to explore what Jung termed the “Self,” the archetype of wholeness and unification of our conscious and unconscious parts. After a few years of creating mandalas for myself, I wondered if creating them with others would foster connections of trust, cooperation, and solidarity.

Creating art is an act of magic. I am part of a community that practices magic on the regular, so I wanted to find ways to use visual expression as a tool to create magic for the community, magic that would bring people together in time and would continue to live through the artifact created a mandala that would act as a sigil and a talisman to radiate out the intention and energy of the original working and a magnet to attract those energies to support the community.

My first experiment was in 2013 with members of the DC Pagan community at the Open Hearth community center. This was a time of some upheaval in the local community. As Jung said in 1957, a mandala “appears as a compensatory archetype during times of disorder.” I wouldn’t say that the magic of that mandala kept the center open or the local community cohesive, but it did give a focal point for our desire for the type of community that calls for all hands on deck to create the world we want to live in.

Last year, I wanted to bring an art project to the community again, so I facilitated the design, creation, and charging of another mandala at the Sacred Space conference in March 2024. On the first day of the conference, we had a session to brainstorm the design of the mandala. Lots of ideas got thrown around. Sometimes it felt like we would not reach a cohesive design, but I had faith in the caldron of creative chaos into which we put all our ideas and stir and stir until something starts to congeal, develop, and rise out of the caldron. Eventually, a design was sketched out and agreed to by those in attendance.

Sketched out design for the mandala before any painting, March 2024.

Throughout the conference, attendees were encouraged to add their energy to the magic by adding washable, acrylic paint to the canvas. Most had little to no experience with painting and were apprehensive at first, but after a few brushstrokes they began to gain confidence, if not skill. Others came by and added their energy without adding paint and that was totally welcome!

At the end of the weekend, we held a session to ritually charge the mandala in sacred space. The mandala was meant to work on two levels: the physical as a visual expression and reminder of the intention and work we did together and the astral as a thoughtform and seed that would live in the astral for anyone at the conference to use to support their community (defined for this working as the people at the conference and the people in their home covens, circles, groups).

Charged mandala after the conference, April 2024

As a temporary magical artifact, the mandala, as pictured above, was perfectly acceptable it had done its job. Maybe it’s the artist in me, but it wasn’t a finished piece. Which makes sense the work is ongoing and we only worked on it for a weekend. The canvas sat on my easel for quite a few months. I needed to live with it and allow it to sink into my psyche before I could clean it up. I wanted to make sure that I honored the work that went into the image while pulling it into a cohesive image.

For those unfamiliar with my painting process, I work in layers of words and images that are often not seen in the final work. These prayers, symbols, and the energy they carry are still there and doing their work they are just not visible on the surface. I struggled with whether using my typical process would be OK for this work, or would I just be erasing the work of others to satisfy my own aesthetics. And to be totally honest, I’m still not sure, but I needed to move forward. I honored the color choices people made, but I tied everything into something that could be read as one image.

Finished Sacred Space Community Mandala, December 2024.

The major deviation from the original design is in the center of the mandala. I felt the “lollipop” people in the center of the original were too static. They didn’t have feet! I kept getting the message that they needed to dance and move in joy. Also, the original seed in the very center didn’t read as such, so I changed that to an acorn of the white oak (Quercus alba), a native tree to the eastern United States and a symbol of strength and longevity.

Center of the mandala, December 2024.

The Sacred Space Community Mandala will be displayed at this year’s conference in March. What is really exciting is that the painting will be auctioned during the conference, with the proceeds going toward funding scholarships for people who need financial assistance to attend the 2026 conference!

Comments?

I would love to hear your thoughts, questions, and experiences. Did you participate in the making of the mandala at the conference? Have you made art in community? Do you integrate your art with your spiritual or magic practice?

TITLE: Ep 20: John Beckett, Druidry, and Public Ritual

URL: angelaraincatcher.substack.com

My guest today is John Beckett, Druid and author of The Path of Paganism and Paganism in Depth. John is a Druid in the Order of Bards, Ovates and Druids, and a member of r nDraocht Fin. He has served 12 years as the Coordinating Officer of the Denton Covenant of Unitarian Universalist Pagans and 3 years on the Board of Trustees of CUUPS Continental. His blog, Under the Ancient Oaks, is part of the Pagan channel of Patheos, the largest multi-religion website in the world. John lives in the Dallas-Fort Worth area and earns his keep as an engineer. He calls his personal practice “ancestral, devotional, ecstatic, oracular, magical, public, Pagan polytheism” because, as he says, he hasn’t come up with a catchy name for it yet.
