The local Arts council asked me to do a talk / reading this weekend. I overcame my reluctance and did it. Interesting experience. Small but responsive audience. I think I'll do it again next year.

SHANTELL POWELL Online on Zoom: 857 9260 0994 694849 EMERGING WRITERS READING SERIES Fabled February Ft. Are Poetry Magazine 7 pm Monday, February 13th, 2023What genres and characters do you gravitate towards and why? I am drawn to mythology, folklore, fairytale, and religious lore. These stories are a treasure trove of symbolism and knowledge with themes transcending time and place. With the words "Once upon a time," a reader or listener is transported into a new world with infinite possibilities. I was raised within an apocalyptic cult, and though I left this years ago with no regrets whatsoever, the creation stories and prophecies of imminent Armageddon fuel my imagination and come pouring out on the page. I went on to major in Classics, specializing in Greek and Roman mythology. A lot of what I write now marries these epic tales with Indigenous ways of knowing, where humans are weighted no more importantly than their relations: the animals, plants, water, and land. I have been learning more about Inuit oral traditions. Inuit stories have some of the most terrifying monsters I have encountered in any mythos. I love scary stories, funny stories, and grimdark fantasy. I am currently writing a slipstream cli-fi novel featuring such characters as the Sumerian god of water and semen, the much-maligned snake from the Garden of Eden, several biblically-accurate angels, as well as sentient water, earth, and trees. I write the sorts of things Ilike to read.
