The Wolf That Wasn't

Farley Mowat's 1963 book 'Never Cry Wolf' changed public perception of wolves, portraying them as complex social animals, not just killers. The book remains controversial. While Mowat insisted it was non-fiction, critics have long alleged that he fabricated key events. The debate over its factual accuracy highlights the blurred line between narrative non-fiction and storytelling. #Canada #FarleyMowat #CanLit #Conservation

I've just finished reading Voices in Time by Canadian author Hugh MacLennan. (Book cover image below) A synthesis of speculative and historical fiction published in 1980 and set in 2030 - after the destruction of Western civilization.
His story of the middle and late 20th century resonates eerily with events occurring today.
His characters are all too human.

My story Fist City appears in The Bookends Review and a dark little tale it is too.

I relate to this so much; I also have the layer that I am #urban #metis and white in appearance with a #settler paternal heritage.
#Lateralviolence needs to stop. It was #colonialism that divided our people, not #Indigenous ourselves.

“Leather and Naughahyde” by Marilyn Dumont
So, I'm having coffee with this treaty guy from up north and we're
laughing at how crazy ‘the mooniyaw’ are in the city and the con-
versation comes around to where I'm from, as it does in under-
ground languages, in the oblique way it does to find out someone's
status without actually asking, and knowing this, I say I'm Metis
like it’s an apology and he says, ‘mmh,’ like he forgives me, like
he’s got a big heart and mine's pumping diluted blood and his voice
has sounded well-fed up till this point, but now it goes thin like
he’s across the room taking another look and when he returns he’s
got ‘this look,’ that says he’s leather and I'm naughahyde.

I gave my English friend a #RobertsonDavies novel, a short one first of a trilogy, and he tells me he enjoys the writing enormously and is moving quickly through it despite having two additional books on the go. I then read up on Davies and find he matriculated from Balliol College at Oxford.

I'm not surprised a UK reader is comfortable with RD's 20th-century style.

I'm chuffed my mate can broaden his leisure reading to #CanLit, and that I found a worthy introduction for him.

A Novelist's Alter Ego

Robertson Davies, a key figure in Canadian literature, was known for novels like 'Fifth Business.' Less known is his work's connection to Jungian psychology, exploring archetypes & the subconscious. His famous public persona, with its flowing beard and grand style, was said to mirror the wise 'magus' characters found in his fiction, blurring the line between the author & his creation. #Canada #RobertsonDavies #CanLit #Jung
