"In its early years, quantum mechanics was known as Knabenphysik, German for “boys’ physics,” highlighting the youth of many of the physicists involved — and simultaneously assuming their gender. But women were working in the field all along..."

The latest AASWomen newsletter [1] includes a link to a review [2] of the book "Women in the History of Quantum Physics" edited by Patrick Charbonneau, Michelle Frank, Margriet van der Heijden and Daniela Monaldi.

Should be interesting to dig through the recent quantum history page [3] to see if the names are all there.

Have you ever heard of #qubits? These units of information are a fundamental concept in #QuantumScience – and the next entry in our #ScienceGlossary. As part of #QuantumYear2025, we're breaking down key terms, one step at a time: go.tum.de/239519

A yellow informational graphic from the Technical University of Munich titled 'TUM science glossary.' The main topic is 'Qubits,' which are described as the basic units of information in a quantum computer. The text explains that, unlike classical bits that are either 0 or 1, qubits can exist in a superposition of states and can be entangled with each other. The TUM website link (www.tum.de/quantum-technologies) is displayed at the bottom.

Breaking down complex terms – and making it understandable for everyone: that’s what we aim to do with our new #ScienceGlossary. In keeping with the #QuantumYear2025, let's explore the world of quantum together, starting with the term #Quantum: go.tum.de/895011

Below, the term 'Quantum' is defined in bold text as the smallest discrete unit of physical objects, including matter, light, and energy. The description explains that quanta behave differently from classical objects, exhibiting both wave and particle properties. Celebrating #QuantumYear2025

The European Physical Society (EPS) has made our City, the City of Göttingen, an “EPS Historic Site” in recognition of its leading role in the development of quantum mechanics: uni-goettingen.de/en/3240.html

Visit the historic plaque at the #ForumWissen and find out how Göttingen researchers have worked together to make amazing discoveries: forum-wissen.de/en/sonderausst

The City of Göttingen is now an EPS Historic Site!

In this "International Year of Quantum Science and Technology" 2025, the European Physical Society honours the City of Göttingen with the title "EPS Historic Site". Quantum mechanics was founded 100 years ago in Göttingen.

Earlier in tonight's ongoing live stream of the award ceremony (in English, on Youtube, link see below), the memorial plaque that will be on display in front of the Forum Wissen on Bürgerstraße has been revealed, with a QR Code that will point visitors to the "Quantum History Wall".

As part of his talk, Sami K. Solanki reminds the #DPGGOE25 audience that among the two physical effects used to measure magnetic fields in the #Sun, the Hanle effect and the Zeeman effect, the Hanle effect was discovered 101 years ago in #Göttingen, as part of the period of discoveries in quantum mechanics that the #quantumyear2025 is currently celebrating.

He dedicates another part of the talk to the @sunrise3 mission, on which there will also be a more in-depth talk later in the week again:

dpg-verhandlungen.de/year/2025

A slide summarizing the three Sunrise missions in four irregularly placed panels: Flight paths projected on a map for all three missions, a picture of the Sunrise telescope and the Sunrise team on the ground, and two text boxes explaining the mission objectives and the mission characteristics.A slide on the Zeeman and the Hanle effect, specifically pointing out that the Hanle effect was discovered 101 years ago in Göttingen.A wide-angle view of a large auditorium with a title slide high up on the wall, a speaker center stage far away, and the audience filling the right half of the image. An image of the Sun is featured prominently on the title page.
