The airshow is in my town tomorrow, and an RCAF F18 (CF-188) was doing some warm ups. @cvvhrn - what is your secret to taking pictures of planes against the sky and getting them to turn out? I am using a Canon EF-S 55-250mm zoom (at 250mm) with a lens hood and manually set to f/14 and 1/2000 shutter. I then leave ISO on "Auto" but I still need to try and fix the images afterwards. Do you use a special filter? Any advice?

Cool. Canada’s new Search and Rescue aircraft -- CC-295 Kingfisher -- is in service and SARs are jumping out of it! (because that's their job!). This aircraft replaced the big old DHC-5 Buffalo. It's currently only deployed from CFB Comox but others will be based at Greenwood, Trenton, and Winnipeg.

And the outcome was good. Pilot of a crashed aircraft recovered and taken to hospital.

My mother died this morning as the sun was rising. She was 102 and everyone says how lucky I was to have her for so long, but I would give all I have for one more day with her. She was an extraordinarily decent and loving person. A veteran of the Second World War, having served in the Royal Canadian Air Force Women’s Division in Newfoundland helping to track and protect ship convoys across the North Atlantic. She lived very independently with my husband and I until she went into the hospital six days ago. My heart is broken.

Here's weird bit of family history.

In 1939, King George VI (and Queen Elizabeth) became the first reigning Canadian monarch to visit the country. After their month-long visit they left Halifax on RMS Empress of Britain, escorted by multiple ships. Also escorting the King was a flight of RCAF Stranraer biplane flying boats.

My dad was aircrew on one of those Stranraers.

Just months later he flew patrols in one over the Gulf of St. Lawrence after Canada's entry into WW2.

The Gripen was in contention instead of the F-35 a few years ago. It's now in contention again due to you know what. Apparently they also have a new Rolls-Royce instead of the GE engine available.
