What #Spain’s #blackout says about the grid
#RenewableEnergy is changing the grid.
Whether or not #solar and #wind contributed to blackout as a root cause, we do know that wind and solar don’t contribute to grid stability in the same way that some other power sources do, says Seaver Wang, climate lead of the Breakthrough Institute, an environmental research organization. Regardless of whether #renewables are to blame, more capability to stabilize the grid would only help.

So another war between petro states flexing and chest thumping.
Petrol, diesel and gas will all go up, pushing the cost of electricity up, a bad thing for those without solar and batteries.

On the plus side it'll mean the value of exports to the grid will go up so the ROI will come down quicker.

Powering using stranded is an interesting idea. Perhaps, though, if our grids were more interconnected such energy could be shared further afield?

Greenwashing

Labour are at it as much as the previous maladministration,

Meanwhile investment in real renewables (Miliband - carbon capture is not one of them even if your paymasters say so) stagnates or is

Really good here by Ember. It’s really readable. I never thought I’ld ever see ‘Birmingham, UK’ in the same sentence as ‘sunny cities’.

The TLDR here is that 5kw of solar plus 17kwh of batteries can give you 97% cover for a 1kwh load. (for Vegas).

But for Birmingham, UK it’s at 61% cover.

A graph of solar usage for Birmingham, UK. Using a 5kwh system a ton of energy would be used during the whole year - least during the winter but only about 10% of the year sees a big drop off. Battery usage is most during the summer.

It's not a bad idea, but I guess you will have to stabilize the topsoil before installing the panels. I wonder how or even if they're stabilized now...

This is exciting:

Could be a real game changer in Africa especially (and battery prices still have a long way to fall!).
