Supposedly based on a real troublesome event and riddled with much #film-making adversity, Raúl Ruiz's O Território [The Territory] (1981) nearly stranded as much as the hikers did. In support, Wim Wenders used the same cast for his Der Stand der Dinge (1982), about a film crew's attempt to remake Roger Corman's Day the World Ended (1955). In a wonderful, unscripted circular way, Corman was one of the executive producers of O Território.

A sailor promises a job to a fresh faced student who just murdered his employer for no good reason & needs to escape. All he wants in return: three Dutch crowns & have his story listened to. #RaulRuiz's take on Ship of the Dead is a nasty riddle. Episodic stories within stories never pan out. They go around in circles then change directions at a moment's notice. His typical visual style- wide angle, no depth of field trickery adds to our confusion & its dreamlike imagery. #threecrownsofthesailor
Ruiz's adult fairytale has no city nor pirates but crazy colors, incomprehensible plot and Anne Alvaro's long, emotionless face. It has something to do with Ophelia complex and being trapped by family, gender, history, time.… I find the equivalent to Ruiz’s dreamlike lucidity only in writings of Proust.
