@thelinuxcast just been listening to ep 215 "The Everything for Everybody Episode" and got to you talking about #android #EBookReaders. I use #ReadEra, and i think its very good. Its proprietary, but it has no ads*, and is pretty customisable. (And it doesn't have internet permissions.)
*They sometimes do fullscreen popups for the paid version, but they're not obnoxious
I've also used #Librera, which is FOSS, with extreme customisation, but I'm more used to ReadEra.

My commute into the office rn is awful bc of the construction, and I ended up using the #readera app's read aloud feature, mostly out of curiosity. Out of the box, it is way smoother than I was expecting, and honestly strong rec to the app for that alone. Also it handled the romanized Chinese names and terms sprinkles through (lol scum villain fic) way better than I expected. However it DID startle me when it read the kaomoji this author had in their chapter notes as actual characters, loool. It clearly recognized them and switched to the Japanese ASR model from the English one.
A little push for #ReadEra my go to book, comicbook and .pdf reader.
Been using it on my phones and tablets for years and they never have any ads. Anyways, they asked if I could share their cool app and I thought, "Sure!" Have a look at their work, ☺️

@skolima WTF? I've been paying for Pocket Premium subscription since 2019, specifically so that Mozilla could have enough money to keep it running. This is a catastrophe and completely undermines what was left of my confidence im #MozillaFoundation.
#Omnivore was closest we ever got to a viable Pocket alternative, and that's got bought out of existence last October. #Wallabag is probably next best.
I wish there was a robust web page epub converter, so I could read in #ReadEra or e-ink device.

Thanks for the suggestions. ReadEra doesn't seem to be available in F-Droid (yet?). But I tested KOReader and Librera Reader and the latter seems like exactly what I'm after. I remember trying KOReader in the past and finding the interface ... unfriendly.
I've been getting back into using ebooks, using the #ReadEra app on phone and tablets, so I've charged up the #Kindle paper-white my sister owned in 2012.
Fancy for the time but Amazon switched off 3G, no more updates. You can upload new epub/pdf format files over wifi by emailing de-DRM-ed versions of books but for covers to display local uploads over USB with #Calibre is needed.
Wish I'd had it in hospital, as it goes for a week without charging :blobcatcoffee:

I've mentioned before that ReadEra is my favorite ebook reader app on Android. While the free version is great, it is totally worth paying for the Premium version to support the makers. 📚
The killer Premium feature for me is the sync of everything (books, quotes, dictionary, settings) across my phone and tablet. So I can pick up either device and continue reading instantly. 🤩
