New blog post
All right kids it's time for my annual "books wot I read" blog post where I review my year in reading:
https://www.stjohnkarp.net/blog/books-wot-i-read-in-2025/
It's been a fun year in books and I read some really wild stuff. Here's to all the fun we're looking forward to in the new year!
#GoodReads was considerate enough to inform me that I have not succeeded in completing my reading goals for 2025 (No shit. Not a great year for sustained focus...:-/)
This also reminds me that I need to get the fuck off of Goodreads(Amazon) and stop using it. It's been crap for years and will, most likely, continue to be so.
About 2(?) years ago I exported all my lists over to #LibraryThing (?); but, I never managed to start using it.
Getting off Goodreads seems to be a good little resolution to complete for my New Year.
I don't really consider my reading much of a social activity; but, I do like having a public database of books, and creating some #ReadingLists is useful, to me. Also, the incremental tracking important, since I'm usually in the middle of about 6+ books at a time.
Are there any other applications I might consider besides LibraryThing? Suggestions?

All it takes is for people to remain silent when those who dare speak out are silenced.
First, they might lose their jobs for speech. Later, they are imprisoned for their speech. Soon enough, the price of speech rises to the ultimate cost: oneβs life.
But itβs not always easy to recognize that moment of no return when youβre living in it. Are you overreacting or just seeing things clearly?

Do you track your reading habits? "Like the things we eat or the ways we move our bodies, the books we consume get talked about as yet another avenue for self-improvement," writes Tajja Isen for The Walrus. Here's her story about the problem with reading lists, and a way to make them useful and even lead to more enjoyment. Tell us in the comments what you think β and if you track, why.

We turn to knots to find luck, profess undying love, symbolize marriage, and make epic art. If all else fails, we can resort to witchery. Kanya Kanchana invites us down the rabbit hole with six stories on our fascination with knots.

"The colors we see change based on evolution, our genes, our age, our brains, our eyes, the nature and wavelength of light, the seasons, the languages we speak, the cultures we are born into and raised in, the proximity of other colors, the way we observe, and even the high-stakes decisions of the color industry." In our latest reading list, Kanya Kanchana dives deep into our love of color.
This is one of the best 'best of' lists of science fiction books I've seen. It does a pretty good job of balancing more recent books with older 'classics', and makes some good guesses as to which contemporary books will stand the test of time. While everyone will find a favorite author or two missing from Esquire's list (Ken Macleod and Joanna Russ for me), pretty much everything on the list is worth reading.

Found this way deep in my YouTube "Watch Later" collection. It's a really nice guide to getting started with Charles Dickens including a recommended order for select books from Robert Douglas-Fairhurst. It is inspiring to see someone so passionate about their subject.

Might add these to my 2024 Reading List!

βWho is that man?β asked Bossuet.
βA man,β replied Combeferre, βwho saves others.β
Marius added in a grave voice: βI know him.β
This assurance was enough for everyone. Enjolras turned toward Jean Valjean.
βCitizen, welcome.β
And he added: βYou know we are going to die.β
Jean Valjean, without answering, helped the insurgent he had saved get into his uniform.
