Bed in Summer
by Robert Louis Stevenson

In winter I get up at night
And dress by yellow candle-light.
In summer, quite the other way,
I have to go to bed by day.

I have to go to bed and see
The birds still hopping on the tree,
Or hear the grown-up people's feet
Still going past me in the street.

And does it not seem hard to you,
When all the sky is clear and blue,
And I should like so much to play,
To have to go to bed by day?

Although the postcard this photo appears on is postmarked #OnThisDay 21 June 1955, 70 years ago today, the image itself dates back to at least 1890.

A reverse image search led me to the special collections database of University of St Andrews where this photograph of Swallow Falls, Betws-y-Coed, was a part of Scottish photographer James Valentine's collection.

Flipping the postcard over and, sure enough, it's a "Silveresque" postcard published by Valentine & Sons Ltd of Dundee and London.

Other search results also show this photo has been reproduced many, many times.

The contents of the postcard message itself is addressed to Mary from what looks like Doris & Rosemary (I don't think I'm aware of who they were). They're visiting Betwys-y-Coed, enjoying the beautiful scenery, but found Colwyn Bay "too quiet for us".

Today’s shock: ladies are spending hundreds of euros for some #AmericanDuchess#Victorian#shoes. While superficially they might look all authentic, they are glued together in China from cheap components and plastic. Basically the construction is nothing like what a real Victorian #shoe would be.

As someone who really appreciates old charms and hand crafting, this actually angers me. The whole company seems like a scam with massive margins.

New signing art for a customer of the Chapter Two of Esther and Erie… Yes I let myself go, but I was on the train to see Samantha Fish and without network, so... I might as well make the most of it!

Yesterday we also visited the State . It was designed in the 1870s by Richard , a church . If you love , it is worth seeing.

Exterior of the Connecticut State Capitol, showing its tall, golden dome.Inside the House of Representatives chambers, including stained glass windows, artfully painted walls, and rich woods.Statue of Nathan Hale, Connecticut's state Hero, within the capitol. An old-fashioned wooden telephone booth outside Senate chambers. Note the thick walls and double doors to thwart eavesdropping!

James Clerk Maxwell (1831–1879) was born #OTD, 13 June. As a physicist, he ranks alongside Newton & Einstein (“He achieved greatness unequalled”—Max Planck; “I stand on the shoulders of Maxwell”—Albert Einstein).

Maxwell also wrote poetry: “Rigid Body Sings” is based on “Comin’ Through the Rye” by Robert Burns

BY JAMES CLERK MAXWELL

Rigid Body (sings).

Gin a body meet a body
Flyin’ through the air,
Gin a body hit a body,
Will it fly? and where?
Ilka impact has its measure,
Ne’er a ane hae I,
Yet a’ the lads they measure me,
Or, at least, they try.

Gin a body meet a body
Altogether free,
How they travel afterwards
We do not always see.
Ilka problem has its method
By analytics high;
For me, I ken na ane o’ them,
But what the waur am I?

“McGonagall was contributing to a pre-existing poetic culture that hovered between the satirical & the serious, & that caused difficulties for editors faced with deciding which was which”

Bad poetry was good business in Victorian Dundee:

Originally published in THE ARGONAUT in 1883, Milne’s “A New Palingenesis” is, like FRANKENSTEIN, a secular version of the resurrection myth. Adapted in 2022 in comic-book form, it’s available to download for free from Dundee University

A man with a bushy moustache and a Victorian coat and hat stands, legs akimbo, on top of a jumbled array of pipes. Under one arm, a green folder stuffed with papers spills sheets out into the air. Behind him looms a huge, purple, alien-looking head, made up of twisting strands.

“[Milne’s] cryogenics story, ‘Ten Thousand Years in Ice’, in which a survivor from an ancient advanced civilisation is revived in the present, unintentionally became one of science fiction’s great literary hoaxes”

Robert Duncan Milne (1844–1899) was born #OTD, 7 June, in Cupar, Fife. He emigrated to the USA & became America’s first full-time writer of science fiction
