Noticed this insidious brand of nostalgia Instagram accounts recently. They start off with the twee videos of old adverts and TV shows, but it slowly moves onto how ‘Thatcher was right!’ and from there it quickly moves onto ‘Did Mosley have a point?’. It’s not accidental - it’s a pipeline.

The Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) in Japan is known for its militarism and xenophobia, with Takaichi Sanae herself considered an ultra-right-wing politician. Similar to Europe, the new, old enemy (in this case China) is being used as a pretext for rearmament. With its “peace constitution” of 1947, Japan decided to renounce military force and the use of war forever as a lesson learned from World War II. This could now be obsolete.
