Iron Arhat (Tue Luo Han) is always one of my favorite rock teas. This is a very nice (2022) example from Rivers and Lakes Tea.

🎤 Live from Yoshi En talk "Rock Tea Oolong - Yan Cha"

The room is full and people are ready to hear more about this kind of tea and drink some of it.

Only 1/5 of people heard about it before, the presentation starts now!

"It tastes like licking a stone" is how many people reflect on the minerality of it.

The image shows a map of China, focused on the southeastern region, with a spotlight on Fujian province and surrounding areas. The map appears to be a satellite view, with varying shades of green indicating different terrains, and bodies of water in dark blue. Several cities are labeled with both Chinese and English names, including Xiamen (厦门), Quanzhou (泉州), Nanjing (南京), and Taipei (台北). The map is overlaid with provincial boundaries and a few key highways are visible. To the left of the map, there is text in bullet point format. The text reads: “What is Wuyi Yancha? • Wuyi Yancha (武夷岩茶) literally means Rock Tea from the Wuyi Mountains in Northern Fujian, China • it is one of the most prestigious and historic categories of Oolong tea, known for its Yan’yun (岩韵) or ‘rock rhyme’ – a distinct mineral richness and depth in flavor. • Wuyi Yancha is among the oldest of Oolong traditions, dating back to the Song Dynasty (960-1279 CE). • Because of its northern Fujian location near the historic ports of Xiamen and Quanzhou, it was among the first teas exported to Europe. Early black teas may in fact have been highly oxidized Oolongs like Yancha.”The image shows a person standing in a lush green environment, likely a forest or garden. The person is wearing a light blue long-sleeved shirt and dark pants, facing away from the camera. They are positioned near a dark wooden fence and a signpost with orange and white text. The surrounding area is densely packed with green bushes and plants, suggesting a natural setting. A pathway is visible to the left of the person.

Text in the image reads: "No. 2: Cultural heritage" and “The core area (the Wuyi Scenic Reserve) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with centuries of documented tea history. There are many tea legends around Yancha that go back centuries. The most known one possibly being the 'Da Hong Pao' story.” Also, “Isa stands here next to the famous ‘original’ bushes.”

White Rooster Crest is usually processed as a low oxidation, low roast rock tea. Almost more like a green tea than an Oolong. Subtly flavored, it is a rock tea varietal I struggle to appreciate.

Moving my traditional winter rock tea fiesta up a bit this year, from starting after Thanksgiving to starting after Halloween. Golden Water Turtle (Shui Jin Gui) rock tea from Rivers and Lakes.

Vincent told me this year's MyTeaPal Club rock teas, (April, 2025,) are nicer than the batch from last year, (February, 2024,) but this Dong Pian Rou Gui from last year IS actually very good. Medium-Heavy Oxidation and roast, a bit uncommon in modern rock tea producers.

2023 Dong Pian Da Hong Pao (Big Red Robe) from MyTeaPal Club. Working through some samples backlog, a very nice rock tea blend.

Last oolong from the 2023 Tong Xin She Teahouse rock tea tasting flight is an appropriately traditionally produced one. Though quite an unusual name, "Short Foot Oolong"! (Ai Jiao Wu Long.)

Tong Xin She Teahouse's Auspicious Fragrance or Bai Rui Xiang (or White Winter Daphne) is a low oxidation low-medium roast rock tea. High fragrance, appropriate to the name and sweet scent of the tea.

In general, White Rooster Crest is just not my favorite kind of Rock Tea. In processing style it is almost more like a white or green tea than other rock teas, very low oxidation. This Rivers and Lakes version also has a very low roast. I can appreciate the choices, and it isn't bad tea, but it isn't my jam.

Rivers and Lakes Iron Arhat is a traditional style rock tea, and also very enjoyable.

If you like Anxi Oolong or Taiwanese Oolong, but haven't tried rock tea, this 2023 "Light Fire" Da Hong Pao from Rivers and Lakes Tea is a good bridge to appreciating Wuyi Rock Oolongs. Has rock character, but the light fire preserves a more typical oolong perfume.

This "Plum Blossom" (Mei Zhan) is probably my favorite tea of the 2023 TXS Teahouse rock tea flight (so far)! Complex, a little fruity and sweet, well balanced. Good length of flavor.

Yay! A rock tea from the 2023 Tong Xin She rock tea flight with heavier oxidation. A pleasure to drink this "Fo Shou" or Buddha's Hand! Mrs Flannesyad said, "This tastes like sweet flowers! I like rock tea!"

"Tuberose Aroma" (Tie Luo Han) from Tong Xin She Teahouse is a lighter oxidation light/medium roast rock tea. Complex, yet subtle. Intriguing.

"Noon Wraith" is a pretty spooky name for Tong Xin She's 2023 Ban Tian Yao! Is that what it actually means? Medium light oxidation and lighter roast make it a very drinkable and accessible rock tea on this rainy day.

A rather nice Iron Arhat, the closest to traditional or classic rock tea so far from the 2023 Rivers and Lakes rock tea releases.

"Big Red Robe (Light Fire)" from Rivers and Lakes Teas. "Light fire" means high fragrance, this Da Hong Pao almost tastes more like a tie guan yin.

Finishing off my 2024 White2Tea yancha tea club sampler with their OBSX (Old Bush Shui Xian). Perhaps the most rock character of the group. Maybe the most challenging flavor profile for newcomers to the style, but a very tasty example.

Another of my favorite rock tea varietals, Stone Milk (Shi Ru). Lower oxidation on the White2Tea 2024 release, as you can see from the color, means this is a fragrance forward take on Stone Milk. Very nice.
