White Rooster Crest is usually processed as a low oxidation, low roast rock tea. Almost more like a green tea than an Oolong. Subtly flavored, it is a rock tea varietal I struggle to appreciate.

Vincent told me this year's MyTeaPal Club rock teas, (April, 2025,) are nicer than the batch from last year, (February, 2024,) but this Dong Pian Rou Gui from last year IS actually very good. Medium-Heavy Oxidation and roast, a bit uncommon in modern rock tea producers.

Last oolong from the 2023 Tong Xin She Teahouse rock tea tasting flight is an appropriately traditionally produced one. Though quite an unusual name, "Short Foot Oolong"! (Ai Jiao Wu Long.)

Tong Xin She Teahouse's Auspicious Fragrance or Bai Rui Xiang (or White Winter Daphne) is a low oxidation low-medium roast rock tea. High fragrance, appropriate to the name and sweet scent of the tea.

In general, White Rooster Crest is just not my favorite kind of Rock Tea. In processing style it is almost more like a white or green tea than other rock teas, very low oxidation. This Rivers and Lakes version also has a very low roast. I can appreciate the choices, and it isn't bad tea, but it isn't my jam.

If you like Anxi Oolong or Taiwanese Oolong, but haven't tried rock tea, this 2023 "Light Fire" Da Hong Pao from Rivers and Lakes Tea is a good bridge to appreciating Wuyi Rock Oolongs. Has rock character, but the light fire preserves a more typical oolong perfume.

This "Plum Blossom" (Mei Zhan) is probably my favorite tea of the 2023 TXS Teahouse rock tea flight (so far)! Complex, a little fruity and sweet, well balanced. Good length of flavor.

"Big Red Robe (Light Fire)" from Rivers and Lakes Teas. "Light fire" means high fragrance, this Da Hong Pao almost tastes more like a tie guan yin.

Finishing off my 2024 White2Tea yancha tea club sampler with their OBSX (Old Bush Shui Xian). Perhaps the most rock character of the group. Maybe the most challenging flavor profile for newcomers to the style, but a very tasty example.

Another of my favorite rock tea varietals, Stone Milk (Shi Ru). Lower oxidation on the White2Tea 2024 release, as you can see from the color, means this is a fragrance forward take on Stone Milk. Very nice.
