The Igreja de São Bartolomeu de Vila Viçosa was founded in 1636 as the church of the Jesuit College of São João Evangelista, which had been active since the second half of the 16th century. The façade was finished in 1698, but work was still underway in 1759. The towers remain unfinished.

Igreja de Nossa Senhora da Lapa is a #baroque and #rococo catholic church built between 1756 and 1764.

The Vila Viçosa Cross (pics 6 and 7), a national monument since 1910, dates back to the early 16th century. Originally located on the fence of the Santo Agostinho Monastery, it was moved in the mid-19th century to where it now stands.

The Cross is divided into two parts embraced by the serpent and symbolizes redemption from sin and the hope of salvation.
