This picture is not on display at the moment, but I remember seeing it decades ago and its lodging in my memory as an image of late medieval devotion.

In the grand scheme of art history, this particular painting is not of great significance, yet its place in my memory shows how even a minor work can play a major role in the development of an individual's understanding and sensibilities.

The weeping Virgin Mary embraces Christ’s bodythat has been taken down from the Cross. On the left of the picture is Saint Jerome with the lion that was his companion. On the right, a saint wearing the black and white robes of the Dominican Order could be Dominic, but he has no identifying emblem. The donor wears a black garment trimmed with brown fur. The object behind his head is a purple hat, and he wear pattens (wooden overshoes). He is possibly Girolamo Vento, a Genoese merchant living in Bruges in 1469–70.

Printed sepia postcard showing a view of Rogier van der Weyden's 15th century Portrait of a Lady. Published by the National Gallery of Art, Washington DC, No 44. Postally used on 28 September 1945 with Washington DC cancellation, stamp removed, and sent to Polly Oatfield, Woodstock Country School, Woodstock, Vermont. Fairly good condition, with very slight corner bumps, but light creases to several areas.
