The New Gladiators

Hockey includes fighting. This should be obvious because they have a penalty called fighting which they use quite commonly. But in hockey the name fighting is of a very narrow usage. What they really mean is boxing.

If hockey were to be more inclusive they would include other types of fighting. Like martial arts. The first thing hockey fans would notice, would be the kicks. I bet the opposing team would scream bloody murder if kicks were used against them. And you know, it could lead to quite a bloody murder of one of their players.

Skates work best when they are sharp. One time in grade school, we were playing hockey without equipment, but with skates and sticks. I got pushed from behind and ended with my forehead on someone’s skate blade. That’s the only stitch I’ve ever needed. The doctor had to fix it and stop the bleeding.

Once while I was waiting in the emergency room in Toronto, a hockey player came in with a towel around his neck. His injury was a skate blade to the neck. I was ill but wanted the staff to take him first. They did. I wonder just how many stitches he needed. Or if they had to use something more immediate than stitches.

Anyhow these were accidents with skate blades. I wonder how bad it would be if deliberate attacks with these blades were more commonplace. What would happen with a roundhouse? Or a drop kick? I believe that the tough hockey players wouldn’t look so tough anymore.

It’s all fun and games in hockey until the Beijing Serial Killers (really a kung fu dojo with an interest in hockey) win a Stanley Cup through the dead and maimed bodies of the rest of the NHL. Perhaps after all this carnage, the NHL would ban fighting amongst its players. But probably not. After all, the viewership would likely be up.

Like usual, the NHL would say they were policing themselves. Sure that star goalie died because of a kick to the neck. But the other player was suspended for 10 games. That’ll show him. At least more so than 25 years in prison for 2nd degree murder. I bet he wouldn’t do it again for at least 3 games after his suspension.

And that is how the new gladiators start. The public might love it so much that it wouldn’t stop till after the collapse of our civilization. You want more emotion in hockey? Many deaths will indeed bring such an event about.

The whole place was bouncing!

#roundhouse we're sitting here round the stove, drinking tea from water heated on it, looking around and thinking "we did this". It's a good feeling.

Of course the house is not finished, but the rest can be done out of the weather.

The walls have yet to be rendered, but it's habitable!

Inside the roundhouse. The floor is clear and swept, and there is a bed made up beside the stove.

Outside the roundhouse. The shaggy turf roof hangs out far over the walls, to protect them from driving rain. The whole house appears to float a little off the ground. There are some trial patches of lime render.

Upper stud wall completed, and skinned with membrane on the outside.

Oriented strand board spiled and fitted to protect the membrane. This is not the final cladding – there will be weatherboarding over this.

The weather boarding on the left of the doorway is complete, on the right partially done. The decking planks are laid and fastened but not yet trimmed. The door and front windows have yet to be fitted. Inside, the new stove is visible behind a ladder.

The new stove arrives from the forge in the link box of The Little Tractor That Can. The tractor is standing on rough grass by a crooked fence and is lit with strong evening light.

Lucy, for whom we're building the roundhouse, stands by the stove. The walls are still of bare straw, and unused bales still litter the space.

Rebuilding the bale wall that was blown out in the winter storms. This time we're tying the bales into sturdy wooden structure. There's still a problem to be solved in achieving a good seal between the bales and the roof.

My next job is to try to dig out the water pipe up at the #roundhouse site. We laid in 150 metres of pipe to get water up there, marked where the end of the trench was, ran over the marker with a Land Rover, and now we can't find it.

Bother.

This was the state of the #roundhouse when we got up there this morning. It looks an awful lot worse than it is. We got all the bales under cover within an hour. The main structure, and the roof, are fine. None of the windows were damaged, no bales were lost. It could have been far worse.

A caravan which a friend lives in was hit by a falling tree and is badly damaged.

The walk between the back door and the south east window survived, indicating that it doesn't take a lot of structure to stabilise the wall.

The last couple of days I've been sawing weather boarding and decking for the #roundhouse. For a lot of that time I have had help, but this afternoon I haven't, so I've been experimenting with new ways of getting logs onto the bed of the mill with only the help of The Little Tractor That Can.

The Little Tractor That Can parked beside the sawmill shed with its box on. If I can get the front end of a big log onto the bed of the mill, I can get the box under the back end, lift, and reverse very carefully to push the log further on.

#roundhouse We managed to get a few more hours in this afternoon, and that's the stud wall sheeted with oriented strand board. It will get waney edged weatherboarding over this, but that's for another day.

Lucy stands in the door way of her new home. The front wall is very unfinished and the rest of the walls lack render, but it's now a building with a proper perimeter and a real inside and outside.

The framing of the stud wall got finished by torchlight this evening. Today was the last day we could do serious work on the structure until the New Year, because Lucy has important matters to attend to elsewhere. So we'll now just sheet this over for protection from the weather, for now. #roundhouse

Through the frame you can see the underside of the roof, and what will become an area of roofed decking.
