Lamington National Park in Queensland is a sanctuary of ancient rainforests, showcasing a remarkable diversity of tree species rooted in Australia's Gondwanan heritage. The park's varied elevations and microclimates support a rich mosaic of flora. At higher altitudes, you'll find the Antarctic beech (Nothofagus moorei), a relic from the supercontinent Gondwana, thriving in cool, moist conditions. Descending into the subtropical zones, the forest becomes denser with towering Yellow Carabeen (Sloanea woollsii) and Red Carabeen (Karrabina benthamiana), known for their expansive canopies and buttressed trunks . The park also harbors the Hoop Pine (Araucaria cunninghamii), a species dating back over 50 million years . Adding to the botanical diversity are the Black Booyong (Argyrodendron actinophyllum) with their distinctive fluted bases, and the graceful Australian tree ferns (Dicksonia antarctica), which lend a primeval ambiance to the understory. This Is A Colour Wildlife Photo In Landscape Format. In The Upper Right Corner And Filling Most Of That Quarter Is An Adult Leopard Seal (Hydrurga Leptonyx), Sometimes Called A Sea Leopard. An Apex Predator In The Antarctic Only Bettered By The Orca. The Seal Is Resting On Some Broken Sea Ice (Bergy Bits). The Seal's Body Is Aligned Towards The Camera But The Head Is Turned Ninety Degrees To The Left. The Seal Has A Reptilian Look To It With A Pointed And Streamlined Head And Smooth Sleek Body, With Only The Flippers And Tail Interrupting The Smooth Surface. The Upper Parts Are A Dark Grey With The Lower Parts A Lighter Shade Of Grey With Numerous Small Dark Spots. This Seal Has A Long Scar On The Top Of The Body Stretching From The Left Eye To Nearly The Tail. The Sea Ice Surrounding The Seal Has A Light Blue Tint To It With The Water Visible Between The Cracks Having A Light Turquoise Colour.
