Today’s elites have remained the same and their rift has endured. The Dinka president Salva Kiir, born in 1951, has held his position continously since 2005. He has only faced elections once, in 2010. The Nuer vice-president and head of the #SPLM-IO (In Opposition) Riek Machar, born in 1950, has also held his position almost continuously since 2005 (apart from the war years).

As the South Sudanese guerrilla movement #SPLM (Sudan People’s Liberation Movement) became a terrorist one-party independent state, so opened an old rift between its elites, largely along ethnic lines. The ensuing #CivilWar (2013–2018) caused 4.5 million displaced (ca. 40% of the population) and ca. 380,000 excess deaths, including 190,000 violent deaths.

It may have been one of the triggers, but one can also expect Kiir to align more closely with the #RSF, and Machar's #SPLM-IO to seek closer ties with Burhan's #SAF.

Other populations, especially ethnic minorities and other vulnerable groups, remain particularly at risk.

In late January, the #RSF managed to take control of most of Babanusa (West #Kordofan), but not the #SAF garrison; failed to make progress in their siege of El Obeid (North Kordofan); lost Dilling (South Kordofan) to the rebel (and neutral) #SPLM-N, which allied to the SAF for that purpose; and most importantly lost Bahri/#Khartum North to the SAF.

Meanwhile, the #RSF have been expelled of Dilling (South #Kordofan) by enemies #SAF and #SPLM-N, weakening their drive for El Obeid (North Kordofan). Kadugli (South Kordofan) is also better defended.
