#MythologyMonday: It was on the night of #CúChulain‘s return from #Scáthach that he found and caught his two chariot horses, the Grey of Macha, and the Black Steed of the Glen, and this is how he caught them. He was passing along the borders of the Grey Lake that is near the Mountain of Slieve Fuad. He saw a mist rise slowly from the mere and cover all the plain.
Then, as he stood to watch, he saw the form of a mighty steed, grey and weird and phantom-like, rise slowly from the centre of the lake, and draw near to the shore, until it stood with its back to him among the rushes of the water’s edge. Softly CúChulain crept down behind the steed; but it seemed not to hear him come, for it was looking out towards the centre of the lake. Then with a sudden leap, CúChulain was on its neck, his two arms clasped upon its mane.
When it felt the rider on its back, the noble animal shuddered from head to foot, and started back and tried to throw CúChulain, but with all his might he clung and would not be thrown. Then began a struggle of champions between those two heroes, the King of the Heroes of Erin and the King of Erin’s Steeds. All night they wrestled, and the prancing of the steed was heard at Emain Macha, so that the warriors said it thundered, and that a great storm of wind had arisen without.
But when it could by no means throw CúChulain from its back, the horse began to career and course round the island, and that night they fled with the swiftness of the wind three times round all the provinces of Ireland. Once only did they halt in their career, and that was in the Black Glen. From out the waters arose another steed, and trotted by the side of the Grey of Macha, whereupon its fury ceased, and CúChulain could feel beneath his hand that the two horses were obedient to his will.
And he brought them home to Emain and harnessed them to his chariot, and all the men of Ulster marvelled at the splendour of those steeds.` #Celtic

#LegendaryWednesday: `The bridge to #Scathach’s island was enchanted, and could shrink itself down to the width of a sapling, or flex and buck like a wild horse, dipping into the ocean to become wet and slippery! And a great far drop to jagged rocks below it was too.
Not deterred, #CúChulainn took a run at the bridge and was thrown off when it arched its back like an angry cat. A second time he approached, more carefully now, and again was deposited on his rear end to the great amusement of the crowds.
Then he became filled with rage, and the hero-light shone about him, and he was gripped by a warp spasm. With his famous salmon leap he jumped to the middle of the bridge when it was bent to a great height, and before it could recover from its surprise, he had leaped to the other side!` #Celtic

#BookologyThursday #31DaysofHaunting: `The famous Gáe Bulga was given to #CúChulainn by his teacher, the warrioress #Scáthach. The Gáe Bulga seems to have been a spear or javelin (gáe) that could slice through flesh, thus giving its bearer an immense advantage in battle. Cúchulainn used it to kill the two men most dear to him: his son Connla and his foster brother Ferdiad.`

#FolkyFriday: #Scathach, the shadowy warrior-Queen of Scotland who trained #Cúhullain used Imbas Forosnai when she looked into his future:
„When you are an unbeaten champion,
great challenges await you,
alone against the vast hoard.
Warriors will be set aside by you,
necks will be broken by you,
you sword will strike blows to the rear
against Setante's red river.
Hard-bladed, you will cut the trees
by the sign of slaughter, by manly feats.
Cattle will be carried from your hill,
captives will be surrendered by your people
harried by an army for a fortnight,
your cattle will walk the passes.
You will be alone in great hardship against the host.
Scarlet gushes of blood will strike
upon many split and shattered shields.
A band of brigands you will join
and will bring away many people and oxen.
Many wounds will be inflicted
upon you, O hound of Chulainn.
You will suffer a vengeful wound
when you do battle at the last wall.
From your red-pronged weapon there will be defeat,
men pierced against the furious wave,
against the whale-tooth fiercely thrust,
a whale performing feats with blows.
Women will wail and tear their clothes,
Medb and Ailill boast of it.
No death-bed awaits you
after slaughters of great ferocity.“ #Celtic

#MythologyMonday: `When Forgal the Wily, a cunning lord of the fens, returned to his tent he was dismayed to hear his daughters speaking of the handsome young man called #CúChulainn who had won the day's races, and how he had charmed his daughter Emer. As no untested warrior boy would be getting her in trouble, he used the pride of the hero of Ulster to lure him into a supposedly deadly trap: CúChulainn must undergo the training of #Scathach the warrior-queen of the crown of Alba.`

~ Scáthach ~

Also known as "The Shadow," she lived in her fortress on the Isle of Skye. Warriors from near and far sought her out to learn from her expertise in combat. Her biggest rival was her sister Aífe.
