#SeedSprouting

These #SeedSprouting trays I bought for the #parrots work really well I have to say. I can have different sprouts on different layers so I can always have fresh ones available. They can keep for a couple of days in the fridge too. To each jug for the rinse through (twice a day) I add a capful of organic apple cider vinegar so that mould or fungus doesn't develop in the damp environment. Mung Beans - on the top - are the quickest to sprout. Those have only been in for a day and already you can see the little shoots. #parrotfood

A close up of a set of three round, clear plastic sprouting trays showing different seeds and pulses being sprouted in each layer. At the bottom are seeds, in the middle a mixture of seeds and chickpeas and on the top green mung bean on which the little shoots are starting to appear. There is water visible in the middle tray because I had just added more to the top and it is working it's way through to the bottom.

Day 14-

I'm calling this a failure. Still too seedy and they've clearly got bacteria growing in them (cloudy rinse water--and smelly).

I'll try this again with a longer soak time and keep them warmer.

I'm also going to try a shallow soil tray as a separate attempt.

The adventure begins!

We have a ton of garlic chives and we harvest the seeds to try to reduce their spread every year. This year I'm seeing if I can sprout them.

Here's the first batch of seeds winnowed (badly).

Does anybody have recipes for onion seeds or onion seed sprouts? We probably have a pound of them.

These are actually garlic chive seeds. It's a lovely plant, and the bees love it, but it is very aggressive, so we harvested the seed heads and can't figure out what to do with them.

Seed starting

This is how I usually start my seeds especially if there are too few or rare ones.
I wash all utensils well.
I use 2-5 seeds depending on fertility and amount I have for each chili plant. I soak them for 1 day in distilled water or 1% Potassium Nitrate in an ice cube tray at room temperature. I cover that with plastic film/bag.
The next day I place them in a plastic tray with an air tight lid to contain the moisture. I place the seeds on 4-5 layers of moist, not wet kitchen paper to maintain moisture. I also use a small 7W heat mat with thermostat and a thermometer with a sensor and keep it between 27 and 29°C (80-85°F). I place the tray in a waterbath to keep the temperature stable. I normally have high sprout rates >60% and mostly within 10 days, even with older seeds. (I've had good rates with 9 year old Ghost seeds.)
