#SelfBuild

Reyes in Cordoba. This is a beautiful city, the Arabic influence in the architecture is very apparent.

Second window added and *most* of the roof rack. There was a part delivered that was a second driver side part instead of the required off-side part.

Now with skylight. This one should have been simple, but no, I cut the hole too far back meaning the inside cover touches one of the support cross beams. That and play in the hole meant everything slipped forward by 10mm, sliding the adaptor across its nice adhesive seal. Cue much buggering around with the pressure of the adhesive curing quickly. All sorted this morning and I’ve resealed the edges on the roof so fingers are loosely crossed for water tightness.

Second, bigger, hole in the van is for the first of two windows. Measurements were tricky as I want both windows to be in the same position on both sides but with the door the sides aren't quite the same internally.

A bit of structure grinding, frame making and refinement, jigsaw hole cutting, edge treating, priming, sikaflexing and screwing later and this is the result. Still need a bit of cleanup but the first window is in!

First big hole made in the van. A Maxxair MaxxFan to get a bit of air flowing when we are in hotter climates. It was, as you can imagine a bit nerve-wracking but fairly easy in the end. It might even be waterproof 💦

Insulation repair - The 2nd board should have been easy as it was nearly a plain rectangle. Cut to length & fit.

Except...one of the floor batons had been lifted by the expanding foam I used to close any gaps in the insulation. This meant the board wouldn't lie flat. So up with the board and out with the belt sander to get the batten level.

Sadly, I sanded a little too much insulation away and had to do some repair work before I could finally place the board.

A full day of work later, and three sheets of 12mm structural ply are laid on the insulated subfloor.

The first and third boards involved a lot of scribing and cutting, checking fit, modifying, checking fit, modifying, you get the picture.

More insulation including covering the wheel arches. Very bling!

Floor insulation installed and taped. PiR board (foil wrapped foam) in-between the roofing battens, taped with 75mm aluminium tape.

I'd like to say this was the last time I touched any of this but it wasn't.

Some of the sound deadening tiles and first level of insulation is going in on the walls and ceiling too.

The framing for the subfloor is in using roofing battens glued to the floor with Sikaflex 522. Actually I still had to finish the last bit at the back before it's finished but I didn't take a photo so there you go.

This was the inside after finding all the holes in the metalwork left by the previous owner, and painting them with anti-rust paint. There's a bin bag on the top as I was trying to keep the intermittent rain from getting into the rear light and camera that I broke on the first day by letting the van roll a metre down the drive and into the garage 🤦🏼 #muppet

Meet Manny. He's the MAN TGE (VW Crafter rebadge) I've been converting for the last week. He's the big boi long wheelbase version. This photo is of him getting his wheel carrier/ladder combo fitted by #MuleVans in Barnsley.

I'm now a white van man - eek, but he's all l soon(ish) be a fully fledged camper van ready to take our home (and our bikes) to new places without air travel.

#VanLife #campervan #SelfBuild

A front quarter view of a large and shiny white van in front of a teal blue building with the Mule Vans logo on its front.
Today was a race against the rain with this.

Its fiddly to fit on your own, the supplied screws are Chinesium so I just used some wood screws I had lying around

Fridge is in, storage made as well. Me mam gifted some lovely floral bedding and meet Ralph - I made him during lockdown to stop myself from going insane

Ordered new skylight so preparing the area by sanding and painting with rust protection.

Also started insulations

#vanlife #sprinterconversion #selfbuild #camper
Fridge broke in van so ripped that out, in doing so discovered that the floor was wet and also far too thick and heavy.

Decided to revamp and redesign...

Third pic is all the wood removed, so much unnecessary weight!

#cmake именно 3-й ветки не требуется, работает сборка и при 4-й версии. Так что условие в PKGBUILD-файле можно спокойно поправить:

makedepends=("cmake<=3.31.6" git jq gcc ninja)
...
makedepends=(cmake git jq gcc ninja)

/etc/makepkg.conf специально выставлено:
PKGEXT='.pkg.tar'
вместо '.pkg.tar.zst'.
Если там же в
CFLAGS или CXXFLAGS фигурирует -flto, то будут проблемы на этапе конфигурирования cmake'ом:
CMake Error at /usr/share/cmake/Modules/FindPackageHandleStandardArgs.cmake:227 (message):
  Could NOT find Threads (missing: Threads_FOUND)

House foundations were completely finished on 9th April, 2025.
We had left plenty of extra time between the foundations being finished and the house panels arriving just in case of bad weather. The weather couldn't have been better, glorious sunny days with barely any wind. The crew was onsite for 8 days and managed to do a little extra with the digger as we had a water supply pipe going to our polycrub that needed burying.

Work on the foundations began in earnest on 24th March, 2025. Trenches for the footings were finished within the first two days. The crew worked much faster than we expected.
Once the footings were poured the block work quickly followed, then a layer of hardcore within the block perimeter. Radon/moisture membrane and insulation went in on top and finally the floor slab was poured.

A photo of an excavated area. The sandy earth has a series of trenches dug into it that vaguely show the layout of a small house. A small digger is sitting at the end of the area with grassy fields and neighbouring buildings beyond.

The initial draw back of the top soil for the footprint of our house and the drainage was completed on 18th March, 2025. Archaeologist was present as required by Highland council and nothing of interest was found. Two huge mounds of earth and turf were created.
