House foundations were completely finished on 9th April, 2025.
We had left plenty of extra time between the foundations being finished and the house panels arriving just in case of bad weather. The weather couldn't have been better, glorious sunny days with barely any wind. The crew was onsite for 8 days and managed to do a little extra with the digger as we had a water supply pipe going to our polycrub that needed burying.

Work on the foundations began in earnest on 24th March, 2025. Trenches for the footings were finished within the first two days. The crew worked much faster than we expected.
Once the footings were poured the block work quickly followed, then a layer of hardcore within the block perimeter. Radon/moisture membrane and insulation went in on top and finally the floor slab was poured.

The initial draw back of the top soil for the footprint of our house and the drainage was completed on 18th March, 2025. Archaeologist was present as required by Highland council and nothing of interest was found. Two huge mounds of earth and turf were created.

Installing insulation in the ceiling and walls of the office/maker space

Spent two long days putting vapour membrane on the lower part of my renovation near Cambridge just in time to prevent Storm Boris destroying the plywood sheeting. There will eventually be vertical cladding after the windows have gone in.

Still more work to do than I want to think about.

Back in Shropshire now aching in every joint.

A very enjoyable afternoon of Super Nerd Lego today - assembling my uConsole CM4. 12 year old me is beside himself that he's finally got an exciting sci-fi space computer!

It's very nicely made, easy to assemble. I'm looking forward to breaking it in a variety of fun ways.

The open box of the uconsole, on the top is the case case in silver metal beside the screen, keyboard and various other components.

The inside of the console, partially assembled. A black metal enclosure holds several circuit boards and the CM4 module.

An almost completely assembled console - the batteries (two pink 18650 format cells) & battery carrier are installed. There is a thermal pad attached to the compute module board.

The uconsole is completed and powered on. The Raspberry OS welcome screen shows in a small 720p display above a squishy rubber keyboard. The unit is connected to power with a USB-C.

Hey UK #hardware #selfbuild ers - Where's a good place to get 18650 batteries from? I looked at RS, but their own brand is 70mm long and I need max 69mm, and the rest of their stock is brands I've never heard of before.

Did a search for Samsung ones, but only sellers I've never heard of before came up - Anyone have a recommendation for 2.5+ amphour ones? Maybe I should look at #RC fedi? 🤔

Framing at my new house will have to pause for a short while as the swallow chicks have finally hatched. Nature has a habit of redefining priorities.

Unfortunately the nest is exactly where a steel joist needs to go and I can't prepare the location whilst they are there.

The picture isn't great as I didn't want to disturb them any more than I have to.

Residents have started moving into London's biggest community-led self-build housing project.

The project in Ladywell, in Lewisham, south-east London, is on the site of ex-council land and took 15 years to build from conception to completion.

A team of self-build managers, an architect and a carpenter offered training to the residents.

All 36 homes are price-capped, and the project was funded using donations, loans and grants from the public and private sector.

Teamwork makes the dream work. In this case, the studio project kicks into a new gear with labour nicely split between me cutting and installing weatherboards while my wife primes and fills holes. It all goes up pretty fast with the help of cladmate clamps and jolt screws.

A jolt head screw. 90mm nails are way too hard to drive in for this amateur. My old employer to the rescue with the latest in building solutions.

Had the 300kg of steel rebar turn up for the piles today, I've just finished carrying it all up from the road by hand as the truck was in no way making up the driveway, it ran out of traction just 20m up with about 180m to go to the house site.
Next up is is assembling all the bits and pouring concrete.
