I took these photos of a brown bear and her cub while they were salmon fishing at the mouth of the pictured river near to Shiretoko National Park, Hokkaido, *exactly 4 years ago to the day*.

I only had my iPhone X at the time and they were a good 200 metres or more away so I improvised by putting it up to a pair of binoculars, to act as an impromptu telephoto lens.

Looking down from a high cliff face, at a river mouth on the northern coast of the Shiretoko peninsula. In the foreground a short grassy patch gives way to a line of green, leafy deciduous trees. Beyond the trees, a short beach in the distance runs vertically before ending at the river mouth. The other side of the river is a rocky shoreline at the base of a cliff approximately 150 metres tall. The top of the cliff is covered in forest. A deep blue-green sea is to the left. The horizon is high up the image, just one-eighth from the top. If you zoom in very closely, you can just about make out the mother bear and her cub at the mouth of the river, as dark, blurry forms.The same scene photographed through the lens of a pair of binoculars. A circle of visible area occupies most of the photo. It is a magnified view of the very mouth of the river. A patch of sandy, shingled beach is to the bottom and large rocks to the top. Standing on all fours on the sandy beach on the left of the visible area is a large brown bear. She is looking towards her cub who is standing on all fours in the shallow water of the river mouth and looking back towards her. The image is partially washed out and there are areas of chromatic aberration due to the imperfection of the binoculars as a makeshift telephoto lens.
