Clothes horse full of kanji.
These are for a friend's end of school year dance performance; painted on sheets of white fake leather, they're flexible enough to stand being whirled around.
We added the red marks so her pupils can easily get them the rightway round :-)

I've been contacted by an established shop in Hertfordshire that's looking for a freelance #signwriter to do a day or two a week with them.

Their work is for pubs, and they need someone that's able to get going straight away with shadowing, surface gilding, double coating etc.

This is not a trainee position, but there will be opportunities to learn 'on the job', and you'd need your own vehicle.

If you or someone you know might be interested, then send details to sam@bl.ag.

A portion of a brick wall adorned with a fading painted sign that reads, "Newman’s have removed to 289 Collins St., 1 Door from Elizabeth St.". There is lettering visible below this too, making two layers present at the same time, although this earlier layer is less legible.

Learn about the diverse and prolific output of sign painter George Biles, and a retrospective exhibition in Bridport, Dorset, this summer.

Black and white photo of an elderly man with a painter's palette standing in front of a 'Welcome to Bridport' sign that he's working on.

The sign features a combination of lettering and pictorial elements, which includes the text 'Twinned with Sant Vaast-la-Hougue' and 'Please Drive Carefully'.

The picture is of a queen on a throne in a flowing dress and gown, and arched windows behind with sea views.

There are also two coats of arms flanking the main lettering at the top.

My friend, sign painter, and all-round top man Shawn at Providence Painted Signs has had a tragic accident putting him out of work for the foreseeable future.

I would appreciate any boosts that can help spread this Gofundme to support him during his recovery/rehabilitation. And of course donate whatever you can.

Nice extended profile of Justin Lim, a sign painter in Fort Wayne, IN:

“I would say surround yourself with other artists, I mean that's the best way to grow and learn different things. Plus, it's just inspiring to see other people's shops other people's studios, and other people's artwork. That kind of thing it just keeps you growing so you don't get stagnant, it humbles you to  see someone doing like amazing stuff.”

Originally shared with me by regular correspondent Adrian, here is StockCarPete's photo of a ghost sign for 'Rickards, Signwriter, Carriage Painter &c.'

Signs for signwriters are my favourite category of ghost signs, and @RoyReed found a 1913 listing for our man: Alfred Rickards, wheelwright at 48 Carmichael Road, Norwood.

Roy was also able to get a drone shot of it via google maps

Anyone know anything of Frank McComb and his sign shop? It is shown here on 9th St, Pittsburgh, about 90 ft north of Penn Ave, looking north.

The photo is from 1909, so the firm was contemporary to the H.H. Seiferth company recently profiled at bl.ag/seiferth.

Picture courtesy of the Pittsburgh City Photographer Collection, 1901-2000, housed at the University of Pittsburgh digital library.

Detail of an archival black and white photo showing a shopfront with wooden fittings and windows.

There are dimensional letters fixed to the fascia board which say "Frank McComb" and, beneath these the word "Signs" is lettered (and probably gilded) twice in the upper portion of the windows.

The main window then has more lettering with the "Frank McComb" name in a cursive, and the word "Painter" below that, both likely gilded.Archival black and white photo with a detail of the upper portions of terraced buildings. A mounted sign in the space between two floors' windows has mounted dimensional letters reading "Signs", flanked by smaller panels with the words "Brass" and "Glass" painted onto them.Archival black and white photo showing terraced buildings on an American street.

In the foreground there is construction work taking place, which has resulted in a deep trench between the buildings/shops and the tram lines running down the middle of the street.

The buildings themselves are adorned with various forms of mainly painted signage, including one building that is white, in contrast to the other darker premises, with the word "Signs" displayed prominently in the space between the first and second (second and third in the USA) floors.

Save the date: For all of August, there will be an exhibition in Bridport, Dorset, about the life and work of George Biles, a prolific signwriter, decorator, and scenic painter whose career spanned nearly 70 years.

A collection of his Palmers Brewery pub signs have survived, and will be displayed alongside drawings, and more.

I'll post more in the future, but for now, there is an extract from a 1932 article about Biles in the alt text.

#signpainter #signwriter #signpainting #bridport #dorset

Archival photo of three men in a workshop painting various different types of signage.

Extract from 'The Art of the Modern Signwriter' (1932).

"Recently we dropped into the studio of some well known West Country signwriters and decorators, Messrs. Cast and Biles, of 71 East Street, Bridport, in Dorset. Mr. F. G. Biles was apprenticed in 1914 and ten years later founded this business on his own account. There is a wide demand for his services all over the surrounding countryside and he covers, with the help of his assistants whom he has trained himself, a large area embracing Bournemouth, Honiton and Taunton. He contracts mainly to the trade.

"Inn-signs are a prominent feature of his work. These he paints to his own original designs, and some of them are strikingly beautiful. They suggest a return to the old tradition of fine inn-signs which were often painted by passing artists in lieu of payment for their entertainment. Not that the firm, of course, works on this somewhat unbusinesslike basis!

. . .

"Scenic painting is a speciality. In addition there is a great amount of the usual day-to-day work, such as lettering for motor-vans and the like. Some indication of the volume of work done is given by the face that last year Mr. Biles and his assistants used over 20,000 leaves of gold leaf for lettering alone. Even so, he never seems to get stale, and all his work has the authentic touch of the artist and craftsman, distinguishing it from anything cheap and shoddy."
