I’ve been concentrating quite a bit on British cars lately, so I thought I’d go French for a few days for a bit of variety. Meet the Simca 1100 pick-up - although this example, as one of the last mid-eighties examples, was badged as a Talbot. With the 1100 hatch, Simca basically invented the Golf years before Volkswagen did - but the pick-up has a big claim to fame as well. More tomorrow! Yesterday @lionelb raised the question of the similarity of the Renault 8 to the Simca 1000. Both follow the same rear-engined formula, and are in the same size bracket but the main influence on the Simca’s design came from collaboration with Fiat, the French company’s main shareholder at the time the 1000 was introduced in 1961. I saw this late example - the 1000 survived until 1978 - at #RetroClassics Stuttgart in 2016.

Factoid Extra: Chrysler UK’s ‘ ‘78 Show’ revealed the problems facing their 600-odd dealers at the time - a collection of mainly ageing cars & just one ‘modern’ one (in the guise of the Alpine)…
And some were particularly vintage with several from the 1960s: the Simca 1000 originally dated from 1961, the Hillman Hunter from 1966 & the Simca 1100 from 1967 (though its layout was still contemporary).
Still, plenty of room for a discount if popped along…
