Time to have some fun programming.

I've been playing around with and am really liking it. It's fun just checking out the comments in the Odin Source code for examples. This was how I learned and it really does help you really learn to use a language.

Odin's make system reminds me of Pascal. No separate make file just compile the file with the main function in it and the compiler figures out what other files need be compiled.

Go is nice but it feels to corporate.

Pharo developer Esteban Lorenzano discusses the strenghts and limitations of the Smalltalk class browser and how IDEs could improve on it.

@badrihippo modern frameworks like React, Vue, and Van.js are all very similar, but I have not seen a consistent name for this family of frameworks. I have heard it called “The Elm Architecture,” because they are loosely based on how the Elm programming language originally did GUI programming in the browser. I have also heard it called the Model-View-Update paradigm. But most people just call it “React-like” or “Reactive Programming” because they are all similar to the very popular “React.js” framework.

Note that this should not be confused with Functional Reactive Programming (FRP), although the two are not completely different. As I understand it, React-like GUIs and FRP can both be implemented on top of a more powerful and more general computation model called “propagators” (here is the PDF of the original Propagators paper).

@dthompson wrote a really good blog post about FRP, propagators, and React-like frameworks.

I hope that helps, but I am not as well-versed in the theory of this stuff as I should be.

Oh, and I should say, before React-like took over the world wide web, GUI programming was mostly intertwined with Object Oriented Programming and design, so a good place to start might be to read up on Smalltalk OOP and GUI design.

Small talk? No thanks!

But seriously I need some help, share how to overcome this small talk anxiety

OMG.. i still dream every DAY of working in the #Smalltalk world all day and night. I think the only way I'll be able to do it is if I start something myself.

Most of those jobs require 2 PhDs and a couple masters degrees so you can clean t he toilets so the smart people can go potty..

I so want to live in #Gemsones .

Glad to see someone else likes the live environments i so fancy!

The Smalltalk System Browser has survived for 40 years.
That’s not an accident: it solves the context problem extremely well.
But the real friction in modern Smalltalk may lie elsewhere: the lack of composition between IDE tools.

#HyperCard and its programming language #HyperTalk (inspired by #Smalltalk) spread widely into several authoring tools of the early web, like #Macromedia #Director and later #Flash.

There was also a Windows clone #MetaCard that lives on till today under the name #LiveCode (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/LiveCode). Sadly it didn’t stick to it’s simplicity. It’s now bloatware, not usable for me.

Some people name the language #Delphi as a successor, but I’ve never tried it.

To use the geometric tools to measure in metric unit, we need to calibrate. I was thinking about using an Etalon, I am not sure there is system reliable date from Host OS.

Ah yes, the *masterpiece* of Smalltalk: a rewrite engine so "brilliant" that even its creators probably can't remember the syntax 😅. Because who doesn't love a tool that requires a scavenger hunt through 25-year-old examples just to do anything useful? 🕵️‍♂️🔍

Small talk may not profoundly alter your life. But its absence will profoundly alter human life as we know it. We live in a world of intense and often unnecessary division. Small talk is a tiny, free and very possibly priceless reminder of our shared humanity.

@blinry All #Smalltalk systems have that feature, I think. All #LOGO systems, similarly. Back in the day most #Lisp systems did, but that's largely gone out of fashion over the past 40 years. Interpreted language (e.g. #BASIC, #JavaScript, #Lua, #Python) programs necessarily come with user-editable source code, although this is sometimes deliberately obfuscated.

Even in pure compiled languages, most academic (and all #OpenSoirce and #Libre) programs come with user editable source.
