Deep sea mining nodule extraction in the Cook Islands is more likely to lose money than turn a profit, says independent new report https://act.gp/44iEGgh
Earlier this week, Norway stopped all deep sea mining in Arctic waters until at least 2029. A huge win for ocean protection.
Now Norway must join the 40+ countries calling for a global moratorium and protect our oceans for good.

This is a once in a generation opportunity: to stop another extractive industry from damaging the global oceans the way the fossil fuel companies have done to the climate.
Let's #StopDeepSeaMining before it starts.

The decision is another blow to a deep sea mining industry whose viability has come under repeated strain before even going into business.
In November, Cook Islands authorities announced deep sea mining applications in the Pacific nation’s waters would be subject to five year extensions, delaying mining in the region until at least 2032.
And rounding up the week with a bit of #GoodNews for the ocean on the deep sea mining front. 🐙 🌊
Cook Islands seabed mining decision delayed following local opposition
Breaking 🚨 🌊
Cook Islanders holding a banner reading “Don’t Mine the Moana” have confronted an exploration vessel as it returned to Rarotonga port today, protesting the emerging threat of seabed mining. 🐙
Kayaktivists held up banners sending a signal that the Pacific movement against seabed mining is strong and wannabe miners are not welcome here. ✊

Happy World Octopus Day!
Our heartfelt congratulations to the State of Palestine on ratifying the Global Ocean Treaty.
In the face of genocide, famine and suffering, this decision to stand for our shared planet and ocean is a powerful act of courage and solidarity.

Over the weekend the world has reached a significant milestone for ocean protection:
60 countries have ratified the #GlobalOceanTreaty, triggering its entry into force and creating the first ever legal framework for protection of the high seas! 🌊
The next step is using it to create global ocean sanctuaries, where the ocean will have an opportunity to heal, replenish and thrive. 🐳
This is a massive win for the ocean, biodiversity, climate and multilateralism!

"With 60 ratifications, the treaty will now enter into force, ushering in a new era of stewardship for the High Seas. Together, we are protecting marine biodiversity, advancing climate action, and ensuring that our ocean remains healthy and resilient for generations to come.
"This is not just a victory for the ocean, it is a victory for our planet and all who depend on it. Healthy oceans, healthy planet," the Palauan leader says.

The OCEAN floor isn’t a MINE.
It’s home to life we barely understand.
Deep sea mining must be stopped before it starts.
Sorry I missed this update from Thursday last week, but Congo 🇨🇬 is the latest country to ratify the Global Ocean Treaty (aka #BBNJ) bringing the total number of ratifications to 52 out of 60 needed for the treaty to come into effect.
We are so close to acquiring a whole new legal framework for international ocean protection! 🌊🐙🐳

Deep sea mining is another form of colonisation and extraction, driven by greed, powered by distant governments and corporations.
