I've been seeing the: "Cillian Murphy learned '30,000 words of Dutch' over a weekend for 'Oppenheimer'" quite a bit over on #langtwt and I just want to say--even IF this was true (and that's a MASSIVE "if"), 'learning' is not the same as 'retaining'. Cramming for a test is the best way to forget the information once the test is over. And we're in this for the long haul. 💪 Don't be discouraged, you got this! Slow and steady. 😊

Make goals! WHY are you learning the language? Get as specific as possible, not "fluent". Figure out long + short term goals. 🧵

-Learn set phrases, especially common ones you use often. (Optionally switch out words to build new phrases. It's great for hammering in grammar!)
-Write. A lot. About whatever you want to talk about. Then read it out loud.
-Shadow/Repeat after native speakers. You can record yourself too to compare!
-Keep talking, even if you make mistakes! 💪

How to learn/retain new vocab: Use them! For flashcards, put them in sentences, ideally with audio/pics if you can. Write/Journal with them. Chat with others/native speakers using them. Read materials with that type of vocab. Anything where you put them into action. :) 💪

What do the people of #studytoot think about learning after a degree? Community college? Online courses? Self teaching?
I don't mean postgrad, I only have a 2-yr degree and for the moment I'm not planning to get a 4-yr. Just general lifelong learning.
I love community college for human connection and live help, but it's a lot more expensive (and slower) than self teaching, Coursera, etc. I still can't decide which way I want to do things.
