<p>The general rule with security certificates is that they’re only valid until their expiry date. When the certificate for a website expires, your browser should warn you if you try to connect to that site, and it will normally refuse to make the connection as a result. Thankfully, Apple’s signing certificates generally work differently.</p>
<p>When Apple adopted code signing using certificates that it issues, it recognised that applying that policy would result in apps having expiry dates enforced by their certificates, so applies a different rule. When a developer signs an app using their Developer ID Application certificate, a trusted timestamp is included to verify when that signing took place. Provided the certificate was valid at that time, and hasn’t been revoked since, the certificate is deemed valid by macOS.</p>
<p>The same principle applies to Developer ID Installer certificates used to sign install packages, only for several years they weren’t given trusted timestamps. As a result of that, those old installer certificates were only valid as long as the certificate.</p>
<p>Apple changed that several years ago, since when installer packages have normally been given trusted timestamps, so they now work the same as Developer ID Application certificates, and can still be run successfully after their certificate has expired, provided that it was valid at the time in their trusted timestamp, and hasn’t been revoked since. The alarm was raised at around 7:25am, prompting South Wales Police to cordon off streets surrounding Grove Place and Mount Pleasant while specialist officers examined the package.

The package was declared safe by specialist South Wales Police officers shortly before 09:45 BST and the roads reopened. A 37-year-old man was later arrested in connection.

The suitcase, an old-fashioned briefcase with New York street names printed on its cream exterior, a brown leather handle, and gold-coloured fixings, was left near the entrance of Swansea Central Police Station. Witnesses reported that the case was left open on the ground, with what appeared to be various weapons visible inside.

The discovery caused significant disruption in the area, with buses being diverted and people unable to access nearby homes and businesses. There were also reports of congestion during the busy rush hour period while the cordon remained in place.

A statement from the force had said:

“South Wales Police was made aware of a suspicious package at Swansea Central Police Station just after 7:25am this morning. Emergency services responded and a cordon was put in place in surrounding streets as a precaution.

“The incident caused disruption, but thanks to the swift actions of the emergency services, the situation was resolved without any harm.”

South Wales Police later confirmed that the suitcase contained replica firearms and lighters and posed no threat to public safety.

A police spokeswoman added:

“We thank everyone for their patience while the incident was resolved.”

Version 4.3.2 is out now, and adds an "Open With Suspicious Package" service -- available from the Finder context menu, even on macOS 13.3, where the standard Open With submenu has been restricted to the Installer.
