@RejoinEU Only English people (& Americans) are stupid enough to elect those who promise to destroy everything they have. The masochistic urge to be controlled, in servitude, and indebted for generations seems irresistible: Scotland, Wales and the Occupied Six in NI want no part in this. #SNP #PlaidCymru #Think32 #RejoinEU

@murchadhfinn That Lowry and his associates are the third [turd?] party in the Coalition is bad enough; esecially when this government bent the ‘independents’ to suit their term in government and reduced Opposition Speaking time by doing so; then seeing Martin taking the English line against #Kneecap is pretty disheartening too. I truly hope the Opposition will remain united, as more of the worms are let out of this can, and call for an early election repeatedly.
FF/FG are like the Tories - been in power too long, have lost the run of them selves, and lost sight of the morals and integrity for the Republic of Ireland.
None of this is helped by current approaches from the Trump Administration, who wish to divide and conquer everywhere, and implement their dangerous far-right policies.

Starmer’s Labour are pretty useless at most things; but here’s them standing up the the intransigent and belligerent Unionists - putting NI in a slightly closer alignment with the EU than those in the UK.
I wonder what the payoff will be? Because there’s bound to be some sop to the Unionists soon enough.

@RichardJMurphy In all that, the expensive millstone of Northern Ireland’s six counties, still owned and controlled by England, has not been mentioned. There’s even an agreement - Good Friday. Agreement - to help divest England of it. What are they waiting for? #Think32 #UI

@Lazarou Kneecap don’t kowtow to the Royals or to the British administration: so of course they are fair game, even when they are not performing in Britain at all. It’s just more British racism against the Irish, this time. #think32 #UI

Leo Varadkar (not my taste in politics) on the next British general election and what it may mean for both jurisdictions in Ireland, and also for Scotland.

The next British general election is scheduled to happen before the next one here. The reset in relations we are experiencing right now might suddenly turn again and this moment may transpire to have been nothing more than a brief interlude at a time of extraordinary political change. In short, the polls would indicate that Kemi Badenoch or Nigel Farage as prime minister no longer seems a remote possibility. A dramatic shift back to europhobia and towards English or British nationalism will have reverberations for Ireland and the north in particular.
We need to prepare for that possibility and with it an inevitable increase in support for unification of north and south and even a renewed push for Scottish independence. These sorts of events are not anticipated in the programme for government published last week but nonetheless the civil service should begin a file.
Leo Varadkar is a former taoiseach and Fine Gael leader

"Loser's consent" in referendums, especially in sovereignty transfer referendums, and specifically in the case of the referendums that will reunify Ireland.

What does it mean? Why does it matter? How do we go about maximising it?

“The beauty of the Good Friday Agreement was that you could be Irish, British or both. Borders didn’t matter as much because we were all part of the European Union. Brexit ended all of that and shows in very real terms, that if we want to control our destiny across Ireland, then we need to be reunited.” - Ben Collins

Speaking as a Northern Irish Protestant, some Unionists have completely colonial attitudes to the place.

The North of Ireland does not need these sorts of politicians; it does not need the Union at all.

And Unionism, if you like that sort of thing, would be better and more successful without them.

Is Sunak actually proposing conscripting Irish Nationalist and Republican teenagers in the North of Ireland to the British Army? If so, lol, good luck with that.

If not, I’d just point out that the North of Ireland was
exempted from conscription in both WW1 and WW2. If it is to be exempted from National Service, maybe a lot of teenagers would find changing their home addresses to Belfast or Derry an attractive option?

<< some NI unionists are jumping on this as an excuse to argue for a hard border in Ireland.

Exactly like #Brexit and later the #Protocol, they are missing that this issue *encourages* a harder border between #Ireland and Great Britain, and grows support for unification by implying the current NI model doesn't work.

legacy of Empire is yet to be ended in the relation to the UK union.

I have friends and family in England, I wish you no harm, I hope that you can restore sanity to the politics there, for all our sakes, while we are still part of this union.

However, I just don't want to be part of the UK union any longer. I would like your influence over the place I call home gone - the British ruling classes have done enough damage. It is time to go, so we can repair it.
