June 1/24 episode, minute 24, Dr Griffin discusses a paper on the risk of covid transmission on short (less than 3 hours), moderate, and long flights (greater than 6 hours). Data is from before covid vaccines were available. "Long flights with enforced masking: no transmission reported." Longer flights and no masks, more transmission risk. He and host Vincent Racaniello are very surprised that ventilation systems on planes aren't as good as we've all been told. Racaniello says, "So you should wear a mask on planes. . . . On my flight here [to Sweden] from New York, there were two people wearing masks the whole flight! And I felt like saying 'Hey don't you know the air system is really good on these planes?' I'm glad I didn't!"
(He actually specifies"wear a mask on planes in times of high community transmission," but he thinks it's not necessary when there's low community transmission. This strikes me as simplistic, considering how often fellow passengers come from different communities that may have different transmission rates. And, of course, it's an ableist point of view.)
