Ed Smith is leaving Today FM. 😞 Ok, his "Today FM Rocks" show isn't a patch on Ed's Songs of Praise or Ed's Indie Disco, when he was allowed play what he wanted rather than the weird vaguely 00s/2020s mixed-up "rock" AI-generated playlist he was made use (I presume!), but he was still the best thing on the radio airwaves. Major screwup by #TodayFM at noon today.
Crashed their own news bulletin with a #NewsTalk news bulletin, ran an ad OK, ran the weather sponsor ident OK, and then skipped the actual weather report, and straight in to the promo for their premium-rate text-message gambling 'machine'.
Then back to regular programming, with no apology.
Today FM recently won a number of awards for its digital news and current affairs productions. All of these went offline when the station's owners abruptly shut it down after only about a year on the air. This is a good example of why we need properly-funded public media organisations. We simply can't rely on profit-seeking corporations to do public interest media work, nor to keep it available for posterity if they do:
