I... haven't been very active on here today, have I? Well, we got like a foot an a half of snow here today (that's about 45 cm for people using a sensible measurement system), so there's been a lot of shoveling.

Also, I'm tired and grumpy. But not too grumpy to do my game recommendation early tonight!

So, the Owlbear isn't really that into #VisualNovels. I had a lot of fun with Doki Doki Literature Club of course (who didn't?) but it's an anomaly in a couple different ways, not least of which that it's an actual game.

But that doesn't stop me from absolutely loving one with adorable clean art, wonderful characters, and charming stories... which brings us to A Year of Hot Springs.

Actually a collection of three short VNs about friends spending time at a hot spring resort, these tales have charm to spare, and hold a special place in my heart.

I released a small Twine game, the Passing of Autumn, an adaptation of a short story I wrote 20 years ago, and this is the feedback I've gotten so far:

➕ evocative description
➕ interesting setting
➕ well adapted to interactivity
➖ too long
➖ too repetitive if you want to replay
➖ not enough background on the dyad

I will keep these in mind for the future!

Update on remote presentations (Feb 7, 2025)

We've received many questions about what QGCon will do to accommodate people who cannot come to Canada in the current geopolitical context. While QGCon has always been livestreamed, we are considering what more we can do to accommodate remote presentations and remote arcade presenters.

As the situation continues to evolve, we are watching closely and gathering information about the community’s needs concerning remote conference access. We are investigating workable, practical alternatives and look forward to sharing them with you closer to the conference.

In the meantime, we strongly encourage you to apply with your game, project, talk, workshop, or other incredible queer thing, even if you don’t know whether you can make it in person. Please don’t self-select out of QGCon – in the event that coming to Canada is unfeasible, we will work with you to ensure you can meaningfully participate.

Despite everything, we’re looking forward to being in community with you!

Btw, if you are looking for a fun queer/trans game that prominently features Black and South Asian women, I highly recommend Thirsty Suitors. It's a game about a woman who goes back to her small queer home town to face the trauma she's caused all her exes, with one ex in particular getting a very major arch. The game centers around cooking with quick time events, and skateboarding (and also fighting off arranged marriage suitors - it's a whole thing and it's fun). A weird blend of cooking games and tony hawk pro skater and card games, but featuring almost exclusively a BIPoC cast :) I absolutely adored it.

CW for: generational trauma, transphobia, queerphobia, 1st/2nd generation USAmerican PoC trauma, but it's a really nice and healing game if you're ready to receive that information. Seriously, if you're queer and BIPoC, I really recommend the game. It was made with love, but I'm also ready to receive feedback on how it could be better.
