In 2016, Melbourne City Council erected the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner monument at the site where these two Indigenous freedom fighters were executed on 20 January 1842 — the first two people hung in Victoria for resisting British colonisation.

Since 2006, at midday on 20 of January, the Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner Commemoration Committee (TMCC) has held a public ceremony to honour the tens of thousands of First Nations men, women, and children who were slaughtered during the colonisation process — a process whose impacts continue to profoundly affect First Nations people today.

🙏 Publicly acknowledging these historical and ongoing injustices is one small but important step toward addressing this deeply unsatisfactory reality.
The TMCC warmly invites you to attend the 2026 commemoration at the

At 8.00am on Tuesday 20th January 1842, over 5,000 people, a quarter of ’s white population, gathered at the outskirts of crowding round the gallows erected on a small rise east of Swanston St, north of La Trobe St.
The crowd, in a carnival mood, had come to see the public execution of Tunnerminnerwait and Maulboyheenner – the first two people executed in Victoria.
This is their story.
