Content warning:
“There are 11 coded diary entries between 1851 and 1853 that describe shooting and killing people; witnessing others in his employ doing the shooting; going on a “campaign” to kill natives; and later riding over the “battlefield” and seeing the bodies of those he had killed lying dead or “hastily buried”…

Post Office Square, 300 Queen St Brisbane CBD, 5 January 2024 starts at 3:40pm with a followed by spokesperson, government representatives and player; ending at 5:00pm. Kanat Wano to MC
The message on the day will be about re-naming King George Square to Dundalli Place on Dundalli day 5 January 2025 which is the 170th anniversary of his death.

A Dundalli statue to coincide with Dundalli Day 5 January is apt.

Killing for Country

" ‘I can’t argue away the shame’: frontier violence and family history converge in David Marr’s harrowing and important new book"

"A monumental study of the on-the-ground nature of colonisation in New South Wales and Queensland... His forebears’ role in murdering scores of First Peoples during the land grabs that preceded the creation of Australia."

"At the core of this narrative is a simple truism of colonialism: land is the ultimate commodity, the raw material."

Very powerful interview with David Marr and Laura Tingle on the #FrontierWars, and David's ancestors' involvement in the Native Police. 👏 #730Report

Of course, the RSL doesn't think acknowledging the #FrontierWars at the Australian War Memorial is appropriate; it'd spoil the hagiography - canberratimes.com.au/story/821

You know what, I'm fine with that if we build an entirely new place that comprehensively chronicles what white settlers did to Indigenous Australians. We put it in the Parliamentary Triangle so that every busload of tourists and school kids sees and visits it. It should exist and have a clear, prominent, and important place of its own.
In my ideal world, it's an entirely new place that chronicles not only the Frontier Wars but also the arrival of First Nations people to this land, their culture, creativity, art, music, stories, and history from the beginning up to today. And it should be curated by and staffed by First Nations people.
We should have a nationally important place to tell the story of Indigenous Australians.

(note, not hashtagging this with FN-related hashtags as they are not mine to use)

ANZAC day? Juliet, Indiana Jones and I paid a visit to the Fawkner Cemetery ceramic tile memorial mural: “In memory of all who served at home and abroad in times of conflict. “

It is an inclusive memorial that avoids nationalism and recognises that conflict affects people whether they serve in the defence forces or not, and could equally apply to the frontier wars.

We paid our respects to those past and present.

"After an injury during "jungle warfare training", Kamilaroi man Donald Waters signed up to be injected with malaria for medical research. Like many other #Indigenous #veterans, his service and sacrifice went ignored."

The Frontier Wars should, must, be remembered - but in my opinion not on Anzac Day. I'd make it part of a replacement for the Queens/Kings Birthday public holiday we have now.

"The story of frontier warfare is another powerful – and arguably alternative – foundation story. It tells us Australia was built on invasion, dispossession and violence, and that the nation can only ever approach authenticity and wholeness once it gives a proper recognition to this reality."
