Hormuz Strait closed, 150 tankers stranded and two attacked. Maersk suspends the transit of its ships.

Following Iran’s announcement of closing the Strait of Hormuz, citing “unsafe” conditions due to attacks by the US and Israel, Al Jazeera reported on Sunday that “at least 150 tankers, including those carrying crude oil and liquefied natural gas, had dropped anchor in the open waters of the Gulf beyond the Strait of Hormuz.” Two vessels transiting the strait were struck. Meanwhile, Danish logistics giant Maersk has decided to suspend the passage of its ships for security reasons. The strait is a key transit point for global oil trade, through which a fifth of the world’s traded oil and gas passes, and its closure is feared could trigger price explosions.

A vessel, according to the UK maritime security agency Ukmto, was hit off the coast of Oman, “by an unidentified missile above the waterline.” Although the engine room was initially reported as ablaze, it has now been reported that the fire is under control, the crew has been evacuated and is safe. It was likely the crude oil tanker flying the flag of the Republic of Palau that was targeted 5 nautical miles north of the Khasab port, as reported by Omani authorities. The Iranian state television had announced that a tanker was “sinking.”

In another incident, another vessel was struck by an unidentified projectile, Ukmto reported, while maritime security firm Vanguard Tech stated that it was located “approximately 17 nautical miles northwest of Mina Saqr, in the United Arab Emirates.”

“We are suspending the passage of all ships through the Strait of Hormuz until further notice,” Maersk announced. “Consequently, all services connecting Gulf of Persia ports may experience delays, route changes or schedule adjustments,” the group stated in a statement.

US President Donald Trump, in an interview with Fox, expressed confidence regarding the potential impact on prices: “I’m not worried about anything. I’m just doing what is right. In the end, it works,” he said.

–sn–
