This used to be such an amazing upgrade for #atari8bit computers. Not anymore. Such a pity.
I think this is a hard lesson for the retrocomputing community in depending on proprietary designs for modern upgrades. If the U1MB had been released under an open licence, we could have routed around quality problems. Because we can't do that, I'm inclined to agree with FJC that the U1MB is effectively dead.

@feoh So I'm discovering! I'd avoided #Altirra until now because of the #Wine dependency on #Linux, but actually it runs superbly under Wine.
I thought the native package #atari800 would satisfy all my needs, but now that I've set up #Ultimate1MB in Altirra too, I've got a perfect emulation of one of my original hardware setups. I need to figure out how to set up a separate profile in Altirra with the #INCOGNITO firmware. And get an emulated #FujiNet running too. Dunno how feasible that is on Linux.
I finally gave in to my cravings and bought not only an #Atari 1050 disk drive, but an 800XL with #Ultimate1MB mod.
I never had a disk drive for my original 800, and I hankered so hard after the 800XL when it was in the shops, but I knew better than to pester my parents for either. They'd paid an eye-watering sum for my original Atari.
The seller kindly threw in the 1010 cassette drive (no SIO cable, no power supply) in unknown condition. My original 810 is dead; power circuitry problems, I guess. That's the long winter evenings taken care of.
