#WatchList

"The Trump administration is drawing up “secret lists of terrorist groups inside the United States,” Senator Elissa Slotkin said on the floor of Congress yesterday — the first such reference to the effects of National Security Presidential Memorandum 7 (NSPM-7).

The directive, as I’ve reported, lays out Donald Trump’s policies with regard to equating “anti-Christian” and “anti-capitalist” sentiment with domestic terrorism. As a result of the directive, the FBI’s domestic terrorism watchlist is expected to double in the coming months, sources told me.

The Senator from Michigan would know. She is a former CIA analyst and Assistant Secretary of Defense, and now serves on the Senate Armed Services and Homeland Security Committees. She defends the national security state as “good, corn-fed people who just want to help their country” and has said “I’m as hawkish as anyone” on Iran.

In other words, Slotkin is no hater when it comes to the national security system — which makes her warning especially chilling."

Bored Stiff (EP.22): What’s on your watchlist?

Good evening everyone! Hope you all have some good reading material with you again. Two post ago, I asked around what type of niche genres there is and recommendations there are. So far, my watch list has a growing number of titles but for today, I want to show you my number one reads for this year and going into 2026...

Swansea city centre live facial recognition cameras return on September 26

South Wales Police have confirmed that Live Facial Recognition (LFR) technology will be deployed across Swansea city centre on Friday, September 26. The force says the system will help officers identify wanted individuals and high‑risk missing people as part of ongoing public safety measures.

Marked vehicles and signage will highlight the areas where cameras are in use, and officers will be available to answer questions or provide demonstrations.

Before each deployment, police compile a watchlist of individuals who are either wanted by the courts, suspected of offences, or considered at risk of harm. Cameras then scan faces in real time and compare them against the watchlist. If a possible match is flagged, an officer makes a visual check before deciding whether to approach the person.

South Wales Police stressed that anyone not on the watchlist cannot be identified. Images of people who do not trigger an alert are deleted immediately, while alerts are wiped within 24 hours. CCTV footage used by the system is retained for 31 days.

How the technology works in Swansea

The LFR system uses cameras to scan faces in real time and compare them against a police watchlist. Officers then decide whether to engage with anyone flagged by the system.

Police say the technology is used to locate suspects, wanted people and vulnerable missing individuals. They emphasise that images of people not on the watchlist are never stored.

🖥️ What is facial recognition?

Live Facial Recognition (LFR)
Cameras scan faces in real time and check them against a watchlist of wanted or high‑risk individuals.

Retrospective Facial Recognition (RFR)
Still images from CCTV, body‑worn cameras or social media are checked against police databases after an incident.

Operator‑Initiated Facial Recognition (OIFR)
Officers can take a photo on a mobile device and check it instantly against police records.

Why police use it: To identify suspects, find missing people and protect the public.

Why campaigners are concerned: Could be used without enough legal safeguards, misidentify innocent people or expand surveillance in public spaces.

Why South Wales Police say it’s needed

South Wales Police have been one of the UK’s leading adopters of facial recognition technology, deploying it at major events and in busy town centres. Earlier this year, the force confirmed similar operations in Bridgend and during Operation Sceptre week in Swansea.

The technology is part of a wider rollout that includes a mobile facial recognition app for frontline officers in South Wales and Gwent. Known as Operator Initiated Facial Recognition (OIFR), the app has already led to arrests and the identification of missing people.

What campaigners are warning about

An audit by the Information Commissioner’s Office (ICO) earlier this year gave South Wales Police’s use of both live and retrospective facial recognition a “high” assurance rating, citing strong safeguards and oversight. The watchdog found no evidence of bias across age, gender or ethnicity.

However, campaigners remain sceptical. Groups such as Big Brother Watch argue that live facial recognition represents a “significant expansion of the surveillance state” and risks treating “every passer‑by as a walking barcode.” Critics also point out that there is still no dedicated law governing police use of the technology.

What happens next

The force has encouraged anyone with questions or concerns to speak directly to officers during Friday’s deployment. Information leaflets will also be available, and further details about how the technology works can be found on the South Wales Police website.

There Goes My Watchlist As Dark Times Are Ahead

I shouldn’t put so much faith in a single source to watch TV and movies on my list, but I just miss the days when everything was on cable, and Netflix was the only streaming service available that had nearly everything, too.

Crave is also good because it comes with HBO, so that also bundles things together. But now, there are so many platforms that it can be overwhelming for you and your bank account.

A few years ago, when I discovered Microsoft had an app where I could grow a digital collection of movies and TV, I started building it. I bought movies I know I would re-watch, and only I would watch them. I did the same thing with shows, including new ones.

MS had some great deals on films every week, so I always kept an eye out for anything I wanted to add. On occasion, I would sometimes watch movies from my collection on the old Xbox One instead of my computer. Plus, I loved their weekly $4.99 deals on films.

It was nice to have a digital collection on my computer as well as physical DVDs/Blu-Rays of films/shows that I loved even more.

Don’t get me wrong, physical will always reign supreme, but when storage space is limited, I don’t want my collection of those to get too large until I have more space.

Then, I found out last weekend that Microsoft was discontinuing offering movies and TV in its store.

I did not learn about this until Monday, as I was working all weekend when the news broke.

My first question once again was “Why? Why would they do this?” A lot of companies that make game consoles seem to be moving away from being able to watch movies on them. Sony did a few years ago, too.

I read the FAQ, and MS didn’t seem to really explain the reason behind this; they were basically saying, “Too bad, so sad”. No refunds either. While they do say that you can still watch the stuff you’ve already acquired, I don’t think I can trust them on that one. Who knows how long I’ll be able to do that before they remove that feature too?

Plus, what’s the point now? Several shows I had on there will forever remain incomplete.

I was pretty laid back about movie/TV streaming years ago, and that was when Netflix had everything. But aside from now having too many platform options, I also grew protective of my watch time, living in a shared household, or constantly being asked “whatcha watching?” So I turned to watching things on my computer. MS Movies & TV I thought was the most convenient option, as you know, I am not a fan of subscriptions.

It felt like a good place I could watch things with more privacy and without subscribing. Now it seems that it has been taken from us.

Even if this is frustrating, the truth is that it isn’t a much of an inconvenience as I thought. Many of the movies I have I have already seen. Most of my shows, I am caught up on or am rewatching. So far, there’s only one that’s new to me, but I should be able to find it somewhere else. I’ll just need to be more tolerant of sometimes being disturbed.

I really should finish what I was watching on Netflix, and another show I started, I should be able to watch on Amazon. So perhaps losing access to one thing will encourage me to finish those shows and also make it more comfortable with pizza and popcorn on the couch instead of my chair!

It also makes me reflect on where I consume media. For example, I’ve started exploring CBC Gem and found favourites that I discovered a while ago, some other shows on my watch list like Downton Abbey (the one with Maggie Smith), and it’s a Canadian platform.

I appear to be handling this situation rather well, but I still hate this capitalism and licensing shit. First, Nintendo is doing the usual, then Lego did the unforgivable, and now this. At least I have a plan to soldier on despite it.
