Tomsen shows the war's cruel math: For every fighter killed, two more joined. Their brothers. Their cousins. Their friends. You can't kill your way out of tribal revenge.

Before the wall, 3.5 million East Germans walked to freedom. One-fifth of a country emptied itself. The bleeding had to stop. Communist leaders built their prison from concrete.

Afghanistan isn't one war. It's many wars stacked on top of each other like old bones. Soviets. Warlords. Taliban. Americans. The names change. The graves fill the same.

The book tells how Israel's early spies tracked Nazi war criminals across continents. They did not forget. They did not forgive. Adolf Eichmann learned this truth the hard way.

This weekend's read is Elizabeth George's A Banquet of Consequences, pub 2015 by Penguin, 608 pg. It's the 19th in a series of 22 Inspector Lynley novels.

Almost finished, 90%ish. Having fun arguing with the characters about the significance of the clues and the directions they're taking among all the twists and turns presented.
Of course, I think I know who dun it. I'll find out soon.

When Storm's cover finally blew, intelligence agencies disowned him. The warrior became a liability. The hero became a problem. This is how spy stories really end.

#Weekendread by Lena Schätte - Das Schwarz an den Händen meines Vaters.
Ein Buch, das ich in nur zwei Tagen ausgelesen hatte, weil mir die Figuren so schnell so nah waren, dass ich ihnen folgen musste, bis es nicht mehr ging. Sprachlich wunderschön, absolute Empfehlung.

Slewfoot by Brom was a great listen - bewitching in the best sense of the word. The brutality of the Puritans is hard to digest, but knowing that it really happened that way makes it even more enraging. Both Abitha and Samson make interesting characters, and for me, the story came to a satisfactory conclusion. @bookstodon #bookstodon #books #WeekendRead #amreading #iamreading

The cover of Slewfoot by Brom. The inserted text to the left reads: "The New World, 17th century. Abitha, shipped from England to a puritan colony for marriage, loses her husband and is forced to fend for herself - going up against much mightier foes. Help comes in the form of a goat-man that may or may not be the devil. 4 and a half stars." The inserted text to the right reads "rough, relateable, terrific"

"Bloom" could have been a sweet sapphic love story, but Delilah S. Dawson makes sure it comes with a fair share of queasiness and tension about where this is heading. Short and easy to devour on a quiet afternoon.

The cover of the book "Bloom" by Delilah S. Dawson. The inserted text to the left reads "Ro falls head over heels for Ash, a woman she meets at the farmers' market. Ash is beautiful, mysterious and very private. The tumultuous relationship they soon embark on might become Ro's undoing. Four stars." The inserted text to the right reads "seductive, captivating, foreboding"

"Maybe we will drown or burn or starve one day, but until then we get to choose if we’ll add to that destruction or if we will care for each other"

Charlotte McConaghy's "Migrations" is one of my all-time faves - so I had high expectations for "Wild Dark Shore". And what shall I say? She did it again. Gorgeous writing with a tender, powerful and heart-wrenching story. Gave me all the feels and wrecked me in the best possible way.

The cover of "Wild Dark Shore" by Charlotte McConaghy. The inserted text to the left reads: Rowan is washed ashore on a remote Antarctic island, inhabited only by Dominic and his three children. While trying to protect the island's wildlife and the largest seed vault left standing, they each have to come to terms with their ghosts and each others secrets. 5 stars.
The inserted text in the lower right corner says: beautiful, magnificent, devastating.

"It's eat or be eaten"

"The Starving Saints" by Caitlin Starling wasn't what I expected it would be - but I still wasn't disappointed by this enticing, fast-paced, vivid story of false idols and (CW) cannibalism. The second half gets a bit too trippy for my taste and I feel it doesn't quite tie up all lose ends. But it's an exciting ride nevertheless. I also liked the narration of the audiobook. @bookstodon #WeekendRead #bookstodon #amreading #iamreading #frauenlesen

The audiobook cover of "The Starving Saints" by Caitlin Starling. The inserted text to the left reads "A castle besieged, a people starving, a desperation that attracts forces that could mean their salvation or their damnation. A heretic, a knight and a survivor battle with the dangerous unknown. Will they fall under the "saints'" spell and feast upon each other - or will they find a way to end the madness? Four stars." The inserted text to the bottom right reads "imaginative, trippy, entertaining"

Up until the midway point, "Annie Bot" by Sierra Greer was excellent - insightful, provacative and told from a fresh angle. Unfortunately, the plot falls apart a bit in the second half, but the story and the themes it touches still have much going for it. @bookstodon #bookstodon #weekendread #books #amreading #iamreading #frauenlesen

The novel "Annie Bot" by Sierra Greer. A text field next to the cover reads "Annie is a "cuddle bunny" - a robot made to please her owner, Doug. But when he sets her on autodidactic mode, she learns that there may be more she yearns for. A secret and a lie pave the way for her journey of self-discovery.
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️" and a second text field says "thought-provoking, fresh, cerebral"
